In indiana at least it specifically calls it a "county excise tax" its paid every year and goes down as the car gets older.

Wow didn't know you guys have to continuously pay taxes for owning a car. I thought that after paying the taxes when you bought the car, that it's done. Am I wrong?? Well thank god we don't have this in Florida.

Quote from Dictionary.com, the dictionary that can be your best friend through your college years :

excise tax

noun
a tax that is measured by the amount of business done (not on property or income from real estate) [syn: excise]

A tax, similar to a sales tax, imposed on some goods, especially luxuries and cars.

...In other words, a tax for being richer than the average american .

In Mass. we pay sales tax when we buy the car, 5% at that and then a yearly excise tax. I have not got mine yet this year for my Evo, I just bought it a few weeks ago but I am sure it will be around 400 bucks a year.

It will get lower as it gets older. For example, I own a 98 Dodge Dakota as well, excise on that is 50 bucks a year valued at 1600 I think.

Guy, every town in every state has a different excise tax. Just like houses have different taxes based on where you live. BTW...in CT last summer I paid $680
I hope the town feels the evo is worthless this year so I pay a heck of a lot less.

Excise Tax

Yes motor vehicle excise tax stinks.

No not all states have it.

I'm happy to live in PA where we don't have motor vehicle excise tax.

I used to work for a company and we wrote state and local tax systems. One of the first things I learned about is motor vehicle excise tax and and personal property tax. I can not tell you how shocked I was to learn some states charge a tax on your vehicle every year. Since I've always lived in PA and you only pay the 6 percent sales tax once (at the time of vehicle purchase), I was amazed.

Taxes are so different from state to state its amazing. Some very odd rules. Also, and I didn't know this until I leased my wife's current vehicle, in PA we have a 6 percent sales tax on vehicle purchase but a nine percent tax if you lease the vehicle. Hell we pay 8% sales tax if you rent a car.

So yeah, taxes laws make you want to pull your hair out.
