upgraded Factory ECU on the way
I was at the dealer last night purchasing my new blue evo 
and I asked the dealer if they had heard of the rumor of a factory chip coming out ? He was amazed that I had already heard about it and he told me that mitsu had just sent them something about a factory ECU upgrade. So unless he was lying to me, I guess the rumors are true!!

There are several Mitsu Dealer persons on this forum that are quite cool and provide us with info. They have not yet confirmed these ECU rumors... so, unless you get a flood Dealers saying the same thing, I'd still consider it a rumor...

I would certainly like to see a copy of that communication sent to the dealers, if it really exists.
Do we still have anyone on this board who works at a dealership? Or did they all disappear once the Evo's came out?

You're a GM, the reason you haven't heard is because there isn't one in planning, there isn't one in development, there isn't one being produced, and there isn't one coming anytime soon.
None of these rumors are based on facts and all seem to come from salesmen who typicaly learn more about the EVO from prospective customers than from any other source. 99% of these guys are not performance enthusiasts and therefore do not share the passion that we do concerning these vehicles. The more ambitious ones might even get their information from some of the rumor threads on this forum and then pass it on to customers who believe because it came from the "dealership."
Informed sources who are indeed communicating with MMC product development engineers report that there is nothing, nada, zero, zip in the works as far as a factory ECU upgrade.
Quit wishing and just go get something that will allow you to do what you want to alter your ECUs settings. EBC, SAFC, Piggy-back, re-flash, what ever, just do it. No it won't be covered by warranty, so be smart and don't tune it beyond the point of reliability and you won't grenade anything.

jfh, u sound very confident about this ECU not coming. if europe can have their factory backed EVO VIII FQ300 package with HKS downpipe, dragger cat-back, intercooler pipe, and panel filter. i don't see why we can't get similiar upgrades.
i first heard that the EVO was coming 2 years ago. i went ahead and put down my deposit back then. had it there for about 1 1/2 years. the sales team were surprised to see my deposit slip dated way back. my point is that we have to have faith. if there is demand, there will be supply.

Europe also has factory warranty Prodrive Subarus. I would love to see it happen here but I would anticipate a 
stroker (2.3-2.4 liter) upgrade before a more performance oriented ECU.
Factory modifications have to be based on the lowest common denominator within the market which happens to be regions that mandate 91 octane fuel. Much easier from an emissions stand point and much safer from a warranty perspective to increase performance through additional displacement.

introduces an ECU upgrade it will be a replacement, off road ECU with a totally different part number. If it triggers a check engine light, or if it destroys something in the motor, then the computer will detect the aftermarket ECU part #, and our warranty's will be VOID! What I'm saying is .... will NOT release an offroad performace ECU upgrade and cover it under warranty -- that is simply wishful thinking. Instead, it will be just like Mopar performance parts/ECU upgrades, etc ... if you use it, and something goes wrong ... you better slap the factory ECU back in quick. My point: for those of you waiting around for an offroad ECU that is backed up by a warranty, I wish you lots of luck! We're talking a performance upgrade here ....
