loud vibrating noise from rear? (im stumped)

Try driving with the rear windows down. My car does this too. It is aerodynamic buffeting. I think some of those roof spikes might help. Maybe this is the real reason Mitsu designed them.

Well, I noticed my car doing this several years ago. Since then nothing has gone out or failed and it hasn't gotten any worse.
At least try what I suggested, try driving at the speed where you encounter this with the rear windows at some position(s) besides closed. If the sound is much louder inside the car (and I mean a lot louder - like you can feel it) then I think you will see what I mean. Otherwise, I am wrong.

As dumb as it may sound, try rebalancing your wheels. I balanced my six months ago and had the same issues as you. Took em to work and rebalanced them. The drivers front was off 1oz total, and the drivers rear 1.25oz total.
They were zeroed when I did it six months ago. Just a thought and cheap fix.

My personal experience is that the center rear panel was the culprit. It was vibrating against a piece of sheet metal in one place, against the cross-bars in another. To fix it, I velcro'd some closed-cell foam pieces at the touch points.
You can confirm this by removing that panel and hitting your target speed. Mine was loose enough that by lightly tapping different areas of the panel, I could reproduce the sound.

Hi all
Sorry to reply in such an old topic, but I have an exact same issue like Dapper Dan - strange noise (vibrations) from rear end over 90 mph in my 06 MR.
It doesn't sound like rear differential, more likely something with aerodynamics (mayby roof antenna gets vibrations? or vortex?)
Any new ideas in this case?
Hope this is not differential...
Car has 34k miles.
Regards,
Michael

Check the gas tank cover panels under the car. I found one was missing a nut that holds it in place and the funny thing is that the shaft where the nut threads in still has paint on it untouched from the factory. Monday Evo!
