10W60 question

I just heard the strangest thing from a fellow Evo owner who just told me that 0W60 oil is not good for the Evo on street/track because the oil only works best at 60degC.

I'm no oil expert, and the oil I am using these days for track days (ambient temps in Dubai is now around 36 to 40 deg C) is the Castrol EDGE Sport 10W60 which I have had excellent results with as far as having oil temp stability goes.

Question here is, this friend of mine just recommended a fellow Evo owner who plans to get cams and track his IX GSR to use Mobil1 10W30 and I'm wondering if 10W30 is going to be too light and have insufficient shear resistance for a IX.

Any oil gurus here care to comment on the statement about Castrol EDGE Sport 10W60 oil being 'bad' for the car?

Fwiw Ive got s1's in my nine and have not changed weight since day one. Mobile 10w30 the whole time, even after the cams with no issues.

I mean i cant even relate to a 60w oil....Where is this stuff available at? Ive got a couple of buddies with some older vr4s that eat this stuff up. They run 50w now and want thicker.

Holux GPS BT receiver with Windows Mobile /Symbian software as a transponder?

What are S1s?

I'd go with Mobil1 10W30, but we only get Mobil1 0W40 here and I've been warned that they do not offer sufficient protection for trackdays. I typically do around 10 to 12 hot laps, and 2 cool down laps, with oil temps maxing out at 110 degC

10w60's are usually recommended for hotter climates.

personally i use castrol rs 10w60 on my ix. Switching to the new castrol edge 10w60 on my next oil change.

Btw, bmw in the middle-east use castrol 10w60 for the M3/M5/M6 straight from the dealership!

I use 0W-50 in my EVO, and had Castrol 10W-60 in my M3. Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about.

the more i read on here about the different motor oils, the more difference in opinions. some like one and have no problems , some dont and have problems. no one grade of oil is standing out yet.

Cars with hydralic lifters shouldn't use thicker than OEM oil. and I don't know if this is true but I've heard higher weights of oil can caused increased oil pressure?

i m using Mobil1 5w40 for normal day and for track day climate 32-34C.
Now Mobil1 just released their Turbo Racing 15w50 but have not tried yet may b my next oil change just around the corner.
We do not have 10w30 mobil1 here in Malaysia

Pls include your climate so for easy reference, some might use diff viscosity

No offense, but let's stay away from hearsay. He-sid, she-said, they-said doesn't constitute fact, and that's why I was hoping to hear from people who have had some experience with oil and sought to confirm/debunk this belief.

Cheers

I'm from Singapore myself, and know which oil works well in SEA, but since I now work and live in the Middle East (Dubai, to be specific), that grade of oil may not be the best choice given that ambient temps in spring (which we're at now in the UAE) hovers in the 36 to 40 deg C and goes up to 53 deg C in summer. Ambient temps drop to as low as 8 deg at night in winter, but that is still many months away.

Frankly, for daily driving, I feel it is alright to use Mobil1 10W40, but for track and autocross, given that the demands on the engine may be more extreme, I'm trying to seek opinion on whether 10W60 is a good choice, and to confirm/debunk the belief that 10W60 means that the oil only works well AT 60 deg C (personally, I don't think that is true)

Also worth keeping in mind that we do not have much access to 'designer' oils here in the UAE, e.g. APEXi turbo racing oil, HKS Super Turbo Racing, etc. Castrol EDGE Sport and Motul Chrono 300V is about the best I can get my hands on here.

I used Agip Racing Synthetic 10W60 exclusively in my Integra Type R because it is a DE track and autocross car and runs at high temperatures and high RPM for sessions at a time.

Agip since discontinued selling the 10W60 and now sells 5W50 which I just bought 5 cases of but have not used as of yet. The Type R has a history of consuming oil at high RPM and both of my R's did it from day 1 wether I was using Honda 5W30 dino or Castrol GTX or Synthetic and especially drank Mobil 1 for some odd reason. I looked into a heavier weight oil because the car is pretty much track dedicated. As soon as I went to the Agip 10W60 no more consumption issues in the summer heat, on track with steady7k to 9k operation for the past 6 years and 25,000 miles.

However My EVO is completely stock and I intend to keep all OEM specified fluids in it for at least a few more years while fully warrantied. I don't track it and I don't have any issues or needs to switch. I just did an oil change yesterday, filled it with Mobil 1 10W30 and OEM filter runs just fine and I got the M1 on sale at Sam's club.
