350z To Evo
welcome mate.
the Evo has much much better power per dollar ratio. AWD will feel different than RWD in that the car more or less drives itself. the room is MUCH better in the Evo (great back seats room) and the trunk is much more useable. if you havn't driven a 4 cyl. turbo car you'd have to get used to turbo lag a bit under 2500rpm (compared to the vq35's low end torque anyways) - esp. in LA traffic. but it's not that bad; the Evo IX with mivec the spool is very good IMHO.
you're in socal so if you buy your Evo from South Coast Mitsubishi (great prices) you get free oil changes every 3,500 miles.
wear and tear items (clutch, brake pads, etc) will depend on how much you abuse them. My Evo hasn't cost me that much yet in maintenance after 22,000 miles (only changed tires, and 15k miles service (mainly tranny/diff fluid change - $200-ish)
oem tires are crazy pricey, most settle for Falken RT615 255's all around which you can get for around $600 mounted and balanced in socal.
stock brake pads are not worth the price to most ppl, you can look into ferodo's ds2500 which is relatively cheap from a specific website for front and rear. my pads are still all good, because i dont drive like a maniac on the streets.
check www.socalevo.net for more research on how much maintenance items cost at where.
most importantly test drive an Evo, and check with your insurance company how much more or less the Evo will cost ya.
good luck

both are great cars..if its going to be a daily driver im sure the 350z is the better choice compared to a loud *** evo with tbe lol..but I do it anyways..I wake up my whole neighborhood at 5:45 when I leave for week in the morning.
If its going to be raced obviously the evo has the upper hand with more potential and the Evo is cheaper to mod without a doubt.
Going from a sport RWD car to a sticky AWD car might be a big change hopefully you'll love flooring it through the apex of the turn.
Good luck with your decision!

Both weigh about the same, but with the Evo you get way more aftermarket stuff a helluva lot more power for less money, four doors, awd, turbo, better handling. The downfall is these cars are very thirsty.
most girls that i have talked to dont even know wat an evo is. im sad to say that i have to refer to the fast and the furious for them to even begin to realize what it is. but when they will soon realize that you will beat most v8s
I was in the same situation as they guy two posts up...I was about ready to buy a z, when I ran across an evo....after looking at the car I was hooked!!! The rarity of the car should seal the deal....You could easily see 20 z's for every one evo....
As far as modding goes, look at how much it would cost to turbo or supercharge the z, just to bring it into the same league as the evo...plus it's a family car.
*IMHO* The Z is boring, I also had a Z06 got rid of it for the evo....
Just do what makes you happy!!

i work for nissan as a tech and i think the Z is awful!! when it first came out i was in love wit it, but when you get to drive them everyday, god they suck, especially the shift feel, its not smooth, you feel everything through the shifter!!cant see ish from the rear and if your lucky you wont get a hernia getting in and out of the car!!
great drifters though
I don't know what Nissan is thinking? When I was car shoping I asked my self what car has the fastest stock 1/4 mile time under $35,000. It was the Evo with a low 13 sec. The 350 z struggles to break 14 flat!! Evo should be the easy choice.

This happens to ANY RWD cars. Not just the Z.
