1-2 shifting problems and warranty
For me Claudius, it's not the clunk....it's the fact that it feels as though the gearbox wants to jump out of first gear sometimes when I push the clutch and then grab the stick. It's like it springs out of 1st. This doesn't happen going to or from any other gear and it by no means happens all the time or even consistently in any way.
--------I have noticed this noise in my Evo also. Has anyone taken their car to to have them look into it?

yea my evo has been grinding into fifth everytime i get on the highway and the ocassional third gear crunch. been doing it since 250 miles and i get it back from the dealership tomarrow, theyve had it for 2 damn weeks, long time to be evoless
First off man, I think you are doing the right thing by trying to gather a lot of complaints/similar issues.
Second I think Mitsu is going to have to redesign the tranny for 2004 becasue of the "normal" decel noise and some of the other problems like grinding 5th gear and the 1-2 shift problems.
I'm sick of getting the double talk from dealers and mitsu as well. If you complain about noise issues (like the decel noise) they tell you "what do you expect.. you bought a race car" yet if you use the car in competition your warranty is out the window.
I hope you don't just print out this thread, cause you already admitted to using the car for competition purposes.... so any chance of warranty repair is out.

Yea I thought about that Mad. But it's been doing it way before that. Or at least when I first tried it. They already denied work because to them it's a factory feature and not a defect. So I think I'm screwed on this.

Mine used to do that but then i started to do this
push the clutch ALL the way to the floor
instead of pulling it straight down, pull it toward your hip
pushing it to left helped
i know it seems like common sense but try it
anyway i hope you find out whats wrong
mine no longer does that
although i miss shift 2nd to 3rd a couple times
more than 1-2nd but that just could be me

A few people have mentione pulling it to the left and I've tried that. It didn't help. If I shift like I want to which is quick it grinds no matter what. If I give the syncros time to work it's too slow and I get snagged before going into 2nd anyways. I've payed particular attention to the shift into 2nd and nothing I try works. Only thing that somewhat works but is hard to do naturally is to keep revs up while clutch is disengaged and giving time for the syncros to work so I can get it in gear without dropping out of power band. BUT that still doesn't work that efficiently. Right now I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do about it.
try a MK4 VW the 1-2 and 2-3 usually grind if you don't shift like a fuggin sloth...240SX has 1-2 issues sometimes, my old GSX had problems in every gear at one point or another (except 4th for some reason).....it happens....if a snycroed car was really meant for racing you'd have a GETRAG tranny (I LOVE SKYLINE TRANSMISSIONS!!!!)
Mitsu's ( and all cars I'd assume ) with AWD and Manual tranny have some weirdness. When I started with my 2G GSX I had all the same issues. After I learned to shift smoothly and get the timing of the shift down ( you can still shift very fast ) No Issues shifting at any RPM. Keep in mind this isn't the same as bangin gears on a 60's muscle car with built like a brick **** house 4spd and RWD.

Have you spoken to any other dealers in your area??I have real mixed feelings about mitsubishi customer service right now. They replaced my tranny with no drama when they knew they had screwed up in manufatureing and trannies were going out the door with metal shavings in them. But they also flat out lied to me when I first took the car in to have the tranny checked for shavings. ON top of that It took my dealer over a month to even get the allignment specs for the car, I kept calling, they kept saying there is nothing we can do, I kept escalating trough mmusa and the regional guy finally addmitted that my dealership had dropped the ball (clean through to china) and got it squared away..... but even he doesn't return calls or emails uless you escalate on him.
I think it all comes down to the dealership, if they have a bunch of tools working there your gonna get hosed. Any company can support a flawless product, the true measure of an excellent company is how they support products that are less than perfect.
Go get a written statement from an ASE certified mechanic (sucks having to spend the $100 or so but its better than a fubared tranny). Don't include any mention of competition use in anything you send/ show mitsubishi. Then go to another dealer. In your case the problem existed before the car was used for any sort of comp so.....
Edit...
I found the build date I was looking at the wrong sticker..... Feb 2003

Just curious, because mine had 32 miles on it when I took it home, and one of the sales guys was openly talking about "smoking" people when he drives the dealers evo's. My sales guy let him take mine to the gas station before I took it home, but I made my buddy ride with him to assure that he didn't romp all over the car before the 600 mile mark. I cautioned the service manager about that guy and told him they needed to keep an eye on any evo he drove.
I have to agree with Mad on this. Every test drive I've been on the sales reps egg you on to get on it. Test the power, go ahead. If anyone is not following the break ins it's the dealerships! Luckily I got mine with 7miles off the truck, only PDI miles. I went over 800 miles before getting on it. A good 200 miles more than suggested. Nah man. I know what the problem is. POS 5 spd syncro tranny is the problem. Should've left the Japanese tranny in the car. Less syncros, less snag.
