K&N Drop in Air Filter

Anyone tried a K&N drop in air filter on their EVO?

Has anyone found a good price on-line to buy one? So in looking for one on-line they never seems to list the Evo as a choice but a few of them say in the comments (inc. EVO) on an air filter for the normal Lancer .

Does the normal lancer use the same size air filter?

I've got one. Check out:

www.ajusa.com

They offer free shipping. I've bought from then 2 times and have been very pleased w/ the outcome. (ie. not ripped off!)

you're not going to notice anything, but it's not going to hurt you...

I've always run K&N on my turbo cars. I agree as much as they claim additional HP it's not enough to really feel. For me I do it for easier maintenance and better/safer air flow.

mhgsx...did you get the regular Lancer Part # (33-2105) for the EVO?

With a cotton gause element, you can hear the turbo a little bit more.

That should be interesting. I know in my last car it was noticeable from a sound standopoint so I suspect it will be the same on this car...probably even louder.

I know K&N has a guarantee to NOT void the warranty but I will probably remove it before dealer service each time.

Is the K&N filter really louder than the stock paper filter? Is it noticiably louder?

It's not that much louder, hardly noticable.

Al at Dynoflash verified 5 to 7 WHP gain during a dyno day last fall. I installed one after my flash and noticed a better throttle response. I cannot feel the extra HP, but it's consistent with K&N's claim. You also slightly hear the BOV more. Another advantage is with better throttle response, the clutch engagement seems better since the RPMs respond better at idle.

Wasn't there some issue with the MAS airflow sensor readings getting messed up by the drop in fileters. I remember another thread that Shiv mentioned a problem with K&N or RMR drop ins causing the cars to run rich in stock form.

I personally wouldn't use a K&N for better filtration.
Most OEM cars dont come equipped with them. If it was just as simple as adding a few hp with a filter. I think we would see more manufacturers using them.

The viper on the other hand, does come with one as OEM. Then again, I really dont think anyone intends to use a viper on a typical North East road these days with all the dirt and sand covering them.

The K&N filter I had on my old eclipse always got dirty VERY quickly this time of year. Paper may flow less air, but will filter better IMO.

then again, a little extra dirt wont hurt an engine anyways. My old eclipse is still running strong with 160k miles.

just my 2 cents..
