1st round of mods done - now need a cluth

Saturday, I put on my Buschur Racing 3" downpipe, off-road pipe and cat-back, Apexi S-AFC and manual boost controller. Played around with the settings on the AFC, I'm still running a little too rich but I'm definately on the safe side and have plenty of room to grow.

On the test drive after the mod install, took it to a stop and launched it... then proceeded to accelerate like a Civic. Then that familiar burnt clutch smell filled the cabin.

The car hasn't been abused, I never do launches in it. I take it on spirited drives occassionally, but haven't even got it out to the track yet for drag testing. Looks like my drag test is on hold until I can get a better clutch disc.

I've checked the major vendors sites... Buschur, AMS, etc. but I don't see anything. Boost Works wants to sell me a complete Twin-Disc clutch for $1500 (no thanks) - I just want a performance disc to hold up to about 400hp. Any suggestions?

Any clutch is going to smell after doing a hard launch - regardless of its condition. How many horsies do you think you are pulling after the mods you have performed?

it didn't just smell - it flat out slipped through 3 gears. The clutch isn't shot, but I want one that can hold up to a launch since I do intend to drag race it.

no way of telling exactly how much power I'm putting down - but I will say this : it's faster than my stock '01 Camaro SS I traded in for the Evo, and it's just a hair slower (feeling) than my Vortech supercharged '02 Mustang GT. I'm still running rich, and I'm only at about 18-19 lbs of boost. I'm going to knock that up to 20-21 as soon as I get some dyno time to tune my A/F's or I get an EGT gauge to tune with.

Either way, with a **** clutch I can't launch and win races. Guess until I get that taken care of, all my races better be from a roll

Tnere are several less expensive clutch options for the Evo's...AP and Helix are the two most common.

The Exedy units are very pricey, but then again, are dual disk units with cerametallic disks, and an integrated lightweight flywheel....

Yea a serious complete clutch plate, flywheel upgrade is a must for this car. Next years plans but the labor cost is going to suck!

Avatar,

If you slipped the clutch under high RPM's to launch it, your clutch is going to stink up the cabin pretty bad...

Do you feel the clutch physically slipping? Try this, while driving the car, get the car up to 50MPH in 5th gear, then on a nice stretch of highway, push the gas pedal all the way down untill you start hitting boost, if you see your RPM's shootup quickly but the car isnt going any faster, then its time for a new clutch.

A launch at 5000 rpm, followed by shifting at 7500 rpm.

The clutch hasn't been acting up under normal driving, or even accelerating from a roll. Just the launch.

Of course, I could probably retain the stock clutch for some time and drive it normal, but I want to take it down the 1/4 mile, so the launch is too important to me.

Let me make sure I understand here. You're are slipping the clutch through first gear, shift to second and the clutch is still slipping getting back on the gas in second gear and through third gear?

Or are you not lifting when shifting?

Response to first question : Yes.
Response to second question : Yes I am lifting, but shifting very quickly and doing so at ~7500 rpm. I completely let off when I realized I was just eating up clutch - might have done it in 4th but didn't want to push it.

If you punch it at 4500 rpm in second the clutch is slipping?
