You obviously didn't go on the site. It's the same scale used for all vehicles. The Explorer's rating is 7. The hybrid Civic gets a 9. The 1.8L Civic gets a 7. Heck, even the fuel-efficient Yaris gets a 7.

And your comment about deleting the cat is completely false. When you remove the cat it allows more exhaust to exit the system at a higher rate. So, let's say you drive an hour with the cat on your vehicle. It's going to put out a given amount of exhaust for that hour of driving. If you remove the cat from the same vehicle and drive an hour, it WILL produce more exhaust.

If that wasn't the case about removing the cat, than why would it be illegal to remove it for street use?

Just to correct the above, the catalytic converter (or cat for short) is more like a filter that converts bad molecules to less harmful molecules via a chemical reaction. Since the exhaust has to pass through a filter, that is why the velocity is slowed down. The amount of exhaust produced by the engine is the same with or without the cat.

For those who want to learn the correct information of what a catalytic converter (cat) does and how it works, please read this: "How Catalytic Converters Work" at http://auto.howstuffworks.com/catalytic-converter.htm

you have a long way to go..
little extra :
Engine exhaust gases flow through the cat passageways, they contact the coated surface wich initaite the catalyc process...

This is turning into a political debate...

"LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING TWO HOUSES AND SEE IF YOU
CAN TELL WHICH BELONGS TO AN ENVIRONMENTALIST.
HOUSE # 1:
A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas.
Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated
by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the
average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for
electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural
gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property
consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home.
This house is not in a northern or Midwestern "snow belt," either. It's
in the South.
HOUSE # 2:
Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university,
this house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction
can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and
is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central
closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water
through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67
degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The
system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes
25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling
system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000
gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets
goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The
collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers
and shrubs native to the are! a blend the property into the surrounding
rural landscape.
HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of
Nashville,Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist
(and filmmaker) Al Gore.
HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford,
Texas. Also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private
residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush. "

The truth of the matter is that cars have very little to do with the whole picture, however they do have part. Our world is several times cleaner than it was in the 1800's when the whole world was using and burning coal for energy. Producing electricity is still one of the highest pollutants today, and that my friends is what we should be looking at.

As far as the after market parts go I think pollutants have a part to do with it but i also think its more the street racing they are getting at... http://www.news10.net/display_story.aspx?storyid=29479 He may get "life" in prison for "street racing" I doubt your 4 door diesels will get pulled over and fined for having all their banks power adders and they consume the most fuel!!!! Hope this helped and I reserve the fact this is my opinion!!!

There are two primary measures when it comes to emissions. Air Pollution Score which is governed by the EPA. And, fuel economy with is governed by NHTSA and the CAFE system.

Each vehicle receives an Air Pollution Score. Some are better than others. But, SUVs are not always the worst. A 2007 Ford Explorer and 2007 Honda Civic receive the same score. Should we stop buying Civics too? Go play around on their site. Might help you understand how this works.

http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicle/index.htm

And, when it comes to emissions and Air Pollution Scores, EVERY SINGLE NEW VEHICLE SOLD IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA HAS TO MEET THEIR STRINGENT SMOG INSPECTION. There is not a single new vehicle sold in Cali that won't pass the SMOG check. It's a government regulation.

Now, for fuel economy. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy rating is what you were referencing as emissions. Each manufacturer receives a total, combined average score for all vehicles they sell. If they don't hit a given number, they are fined very heavily by the government. So, they make every effort to hit their CAFE number. They do that by carefully planning their product line and very closely monitoring their sales rate for certain vehicle models and adjusting production accordingly.

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site...7529cdba046a0/

Facts are facts. I'm not making this stuff up. And, yes, it would be great if we could have all these crazy technologies and fuel sources right now today. But, that's not reality. We won't have any of those things for years to come. Heck, the government just agreed to adjust the CAFE standards for light trucks (covering pick ups and SUVs) which had been the same for over 30 years. Guess when that will finally go into effect. 2012. Nothing happens fast my friend.

Now, again, for the third time. I'm not saying that this crackdown in Cali is cool (and eventually every other state at some point). It sucks. But, the law is the law right now. Write your congressman/woman. Hopefully it works out for you. But this forum won't really do much for real change.
writing to your congress man or woman about legalizing illegal car parts isn't going to help, in their mind that is going backwards. writing to them about alternative fuel such as e85 or otherwise will FORCE them to reevaluate laws concerning modifications to cars and how they apply to emissions.

the problem is even when you get the e85 chances are the politicians will get greedy and still enforce laws against modification so they can "do their part" to achieve that stupid futuristic blue sky that they saw in the last hollywood movie about the future.

fact is that you ignored what i was sayin, i realize that there's points given to every company but once again, those are based on PERCENTAGES. you're letting SOME CARS go away with CRAP efficiencies on every gallon burned and you're letting some cars go with spectacular. IS THIS ACCEPTABLE??? sorry to say but what does the average american need with an suv especially in light of all the sports utility wagons from companies like subaru??? even dreamworks pokes fun at this in their movie over the hedge, suvs GENERALLY TRANSPORT ONE FREAKIN PERSON while carrying the inefficiencies associated with military transportation vehicles.

you want to make a truly better world? or you wanna beat around the bush so people can buy and sell POINTS. c'mon. the technology for alcohol is available TODAY. you wanna cry about it not being profitable and sustainable... then please try first.

a n suv that's got the same rating as a civic... now you know you got something wrong right??? cuz even if the PERCENTAGES ARE THE SAME you know the suv is putting out more pound for pound in every way sense of the phrase

in order to change the green outlook of the world in america (the most tainting country) you must make america reinvent its visions, idealogies and conceptualizations of what's socially acceptable and what's not.

like the commercial says.

redefine bling, redefine power, redefine luxury, redefine energy etc.

everything will have to be hybrid in the future, some mechanicsm to try to reclaim all that lost energy. sizes of vehicles will be forced to become more efficient

but in light of all this... now that everyone in this thread knows what the future is headed towards, WHERE DOES THAT PUT MOTORSPORTS???

push for biofuels or we will lose everything about motorsports as we know them now.

Trinydex, we're actually more on the same page than either of us think. I like your passion. Good guys have passion for what they believe in. I respect that much more than the guys that say "that sucks" in their posts. You're definitely a good guy who will stand up for what he believes in. I hear ya on all the stuff you're saying. Neither of us is wrong. To be honest, I hate SUVs. Never, ever will I be caught owning one. This whole thread is silly. Bottom line is the laws in Cali suck ***. Hopefully they get better some day. Let's call it a day and let the other folks talk about how much it sucks that they got caught with a cat delete? If I could share one of these with you I would

Be like the eco moonbats and buy a Terrapass and maybe the CHP will let you off next time, pay 79.95 a year so you can pollute without guilt.

http://www.terrapass.com/road/products.road.all.php

Evo's carbon footprint according to Terrapass.

Vehicle:2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution manual transmission
Mileage:19 mpg (city), 25 mpg (highway)
Distance:12,000 miles per year
Fuel use:545 gallons per year
Emissions:10,662 lbs CO2 per year

A Road TerraPass comes in one of four flavors – Around Towner, Cross Towner, Out of Towner, or Road Tripper. Each type is guaranteed to reduce a specific amount of carbon dioxide emissions. For example, an Out of Towner TerraPass offsets 12,000 lbs of CO2.

Based on your vehicle (2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution manual transmission ) and driving habits (12,000 miles per year), you should get an Out of Towner TerraPass.
