Honest opinions needed

Hello all!
I'm a long time lurker, but a first time poster.

Ever since 2003, I have been a big time evo enthusiest.

I'm nearly in the position now that I can afford to buy a nice used Evo 8 for around 20k.

Heres my delima: I am unsure what to do.

I currently have a 1998 Camaro SS 6-Speed. It looks good IMO and runs well also. 462rwhp/552rwtq SAE.

All my life, I'm currently 22 yrs old, I have owned nothing but domestic automobiles.

I started out with a 1993 Camaro Z28 (bought when 15 - sold when 21) then later sold to buy a LS1 car (evo was out of price range).

I really enjoy theses cars for what they are and I'm curious to if I will be "let down" going from a LS1 to an evo.

I kinda want something different ( an evo ), but I'm just wanting to know from other people who have owned both to give me their input on what to expect.

If I could get some input from people who have owned both - that would be great!

Heres my car for whoever wants to check it out.

Before making the plunge I would like to know from others if I would be dissappointed or not, and what the major differences are.

So.... should I trade?

Thanks alot!!
-Jared

I know a local guy that went from a mostly stock 05 Evo VIII to a z06. After a very short time he went through hell to get his Evo back, and I think he lost quite a bit of money in the process but he said having his Evo back was worth it. It is a completely different kind of car and if you're attached to having off idle power you may be disappointed.

EDIT: oh yea, I wouldn't get the Evo if you're huge into drag racing. But if you like driving in the twisties you will not be disappointed. I have a good friend that has a Twinturbo 02 mustang GT and he drove my car at the tail of the dragon. Lets just say he's been pricing Evo's lately and is considering selling his TT GT and my car is bone stock with ****ty tires (500 treadwear rating)

EDIT 2: Oh i see you're not far from the dragon, deff get an evo and go there... every weekend. I can't wait to go back.

Here's my honest opinion. I owned two foxbody mustangs, a 93 5.0 GT and another 87 T-tops GT that I swapped a 351C into. I was probably about 420rwhp or close to that with the 351 and it was a GAS GUZZLER! That was a couple of cars ago, and I do miss it but I would NEVER trade my evo for any v8. That being said, what you'll miss most about your car is the burnouts and the real low end torque. You will not be able to light up your tires like u probably are used to because of the AWD. To me the grip of AWD more than makes up for the lack of V8 low end grunt. You will be able to outrun most RWD cars from a dig, and nothing looks sadder than someone doing a big a$$ burnout before a race and then getting left behind by a car that just drives up to the line. IMO your Evo will sound as good if not better than a V8 once its got a 3" exhaust, and you will easily get the whp up to where you want it. Your going to have to wait for the turbo to spool before the big power kicks in, which will only bother you for the first 5 minutes of owning it. But on Evos the turbo spool doesn't take long so it'll be fine. My honest opinion is... go for it! There's enough toys and mods out there for the evo that you can make yours unique with your own setup.

Besides, there's nothing like the look of fear in eyes of V8 owners when they see an Evo coming up fast in their rear view! Intimidating V8s with 2 liters is an adrenaline rush in itself!

Just as long as the EVO has a big FMIC in the front and a big turbo (i.e.- 50 Trim, GT3076R, GT35R etc etc) to back it up then I'd be scared if I was a V8 owner.....

I hate to generalize but its true that most die hard V8 owners are so anti-import that they dont know the first thing about Evo's and couldn't tell the difference between a stock FMIC and an aftermarket one. They react the same either way. Most of the time when I roll up on domestics in the streets they don't even want to look me in the eyes if they have friends in their car. ESPECIALLY girlfriends! changing 2 lanes to stay away... that kind of thing. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying a stock evo will crush any V8, I'm just saying that most domestic owners get a little insecure around evos.

Thanks for all the honest opinions guys!

I can't afford both cars or I would haha.

Gotta have only 1. The SS is boring to drive everyday which partially makes me want to trade just so I can have something thats maybe a little more street friendly.

Big clutch + loud exhaust = PITA to drive daily (or anytime for that matter, unless racing that is)
