It is a risk, you just don't know what the car has been through especially if your concerned about a budget.

Good luck man!
Just to let you know, an 05 evo is an evo 8 which means that it DOESN'T have mivec. Obviously, you can still get it to mid 300 hp range, but it won't be as easy on an 8. You can get over 350 hp with the mods in my sig (actually all the mods aren't even needed) because I have an evo 9. You will need those mods plus cams for an 8. I know it can be done other ways, but that is just an example.

There is nothing wrong with buying a pre-modded car or a used one for that matter but there are alot of things must be weighed in on, and alot to be inspected. A conventionally modded car gets taken a look at pretty closly and scutinized over just due to the fact that no one wants a lemon, but to buy a car that has the purpose of "spirited" driving the car must be gone over with a fine tooth comb. Then to compile that worry with a purpose built car that has been modified for more power and performance....ouch, your talking about alot of trust or alot of removing parts to find out in what condition it is in. Myself, i am in the market for a Supra and i gotta tell you i am pretty weary about buying one that is too modded seeing how people want to see what their mods can do. Now i have some mods on my ride but i have treated my car with the utmost caution and care and some would even say that i waste the potential of the car because i don't push the car as hard as it can be, but then again i am a responsible enthusiast that doesn't beat on his car. So the contrast are definitly out there of people that mod their cars and don't beat on them and those that purpose build a car and have every intention of seeing that power unleashed. Just be careful and make sure you get some kind of limited time warranty so you don't lose out on too much if things go bad. As far as the cheating thing.....thats a load of crap. No such thing as cheating, some people i know don't want to work on their cars they just want the power and some like to work on them but either way it is your money and you spend it on what makes YOU happy, not what others think. Good luck and keep the car shiny side up man.

I bought mine slightly modded, w/ 46k on the clock. Since then, (approx 5 months ago) I had to replace the clutch, DP, reweld the POS manifold, Boost controller, detuned it, and brakes/rotors. Everything other than the brakes was replaced due to previous mods. I went through the car when I bought it. But being my first turbo car, and hadnt researched Evos too much, I didnt know exactly what to look for.

All that being said, I DO NOT regret it. I wrench on everything I own, and I enjoy it. Everything that the PO did will be replaced at some point. Nothing catastrophic has happened (knocking on wood). I figure I got lucky, though.

To top all that off, I ran into the PO at the strip one day. This guy walks up explaining how a couple scratches got on my car. We start talking. It is his Ex-girlfriend's old car. He did all the modding. And proceeds to tell me about how it went up to 130 every day to and from work (desert back roads in ID), and had gone 12.5s several times at the track. Not really something I wanted to hear, even though I had the car for several months prior. Especially since I couldnt break into the 12s...

Trouble is - i love the evo. I've wanted one ever since it came out and i was maybe looking to buy one when i get home instead of buying more parts. I was wondering.... if i buy an already modded evo is considered cheating because I didn't build it myself? A friend turned me on to a great modded car site and they have some awesome looking cars there.

Good point - someone else has already done the work for you

Bad point - you don't get the satisfaction of seeing your creation grow.

Thoughts ?
you can always add more mods

thing is about moded evo's you do not know whats done as far parts, when evo comes with high milage, like clutch -what kind, any internal work - cams/ what else was done to the engine, some minor things, like oil t-case anything, was it beaten to death? hmm.

And, if you enjoy working on your own stuff, you are the only one that is getting "cheated." Who cares if anyone thinks you are "cheating." Half the people on these boards pay someone to work on their stuff. I dont really see a big difference between the two, unless you start comparing brands.

if I were to do it all over again, I would buy a used modded evo. reason being you save money. even if you dont like some of the parts used. take them off, an sell them to get the parts that you want!

Have a mechanic look at the car if possible, take a test drive and buy it modded IMO. Saves you a bunch of money, time and tuning and you will probably pay the same or less as for a stock Evo. Just try and avoid buying someone else's headache. The car needs to be mechanically sound and reliable. Have the seller take you for a ride and get on it a bit to show you it is problem free. If you do buy stock keep in mind how many people put there Evo's back to stock to sell them which would be the worst of both worlds, a stock Evo that was beat on with mods that you are not getting.
