the white wire is a illumination wire, and it should be T'ed into your headlight wires so that your gauges dim when the headlights are on, so you're not being blinded by the gauges. As the white wire is connected to a 12V consant source, the gauges always think your headlights are on, and they dim.

so... is my $40 safe?

#1 on this. Have you checked yet??

It's your illumination hookup. That IS how bright they are with the lights on. You can see that they switch brightness during the opening sequence. The brighter setting is how they should look with the lights off.

You have them hooked up incorrectly.

I'm using the same boost gauge.

If you want them bright all the time, then just clip the white wire and tape it off. That will make the gauges think the lights are never on.

So, you wanted more suggestions... have you tried what we suggested yet?

I use AEM Gauges so I don't have to worry about illumination. +1 on the incorrect wire hook up. You have an MR so it should have come with the boost gauge pod. Those are the wires I would tap into. Yellow is Illumination, Red is constant 12v, and black is of course ground.
