Gas mileage on modded EVOs?
Gas mileage on modded EVOs?
I know I did not buy the car for gas mileage. But I have very mild mods, in the process of being tuned, and I am starting to realize the car is really drinking under spirited drives.
So far the mods are: TBE with test pipe, drop-in filter, o2 housing, intercooler and some pipings (licp and partial uicp), radiator, a step colder plugs and of course fuel pump.
I usually drive in the mountains and the fun run usually last about 2hrs. If I assume I'm averaging about 60mph, I'm getting about 10mpg or under. There is no way I'm nearing 15mpg otherwise it'll mean I'm averaging 90mph, which is impossible where pretty much every turns come before I even reach end of 3rd gear. I'd love to believe that I'm averaging about 75mph, but no way, not with my skills. Even at 75mph avg, that is only 12.5mpg.
10mpg, I'd say it is a fair trade for fun, considering it is still better than what Murcielago averages in city driving. However, I am giving thoughts of turbo upgrades and maybe a stroker after bolt ons, suspension, brakes, wheels and tires.
What mileage are you guys getting for those with GT30R/GT35R with or without strokers? On track or just spirited driving in general. I mean this isn't stuff you need Motec or other fancy dataloggers, you just need to see how many miles you racked up after a run divided by how much gas you spent (half tank would be about 6.5-7gallons), although I haven't checked myself for my car yet
The reason I'm worried is that after watching top gear, Jeremy mentions about FQ400 doing 4mpg. Yes he usually says things exaggerated with pun intended and that sounds ridiculous for FQ400, but I see it plenty possible on cars with bigger turbos putting down 450-500whp on dyno, especially when my car is doing 10mpg.
It may not be a big deal for most of you and you'd say 'you need to pay to play' but it starts to matter when you live in a place where 98RON (93 for you guys) pump costs $7.50-8.00 a gallon (and it is the only choice we have, we can get one with little less additives but same octane for about 50 cents less but only two choices). Trying to keep up with a car doing 3-4mpg paying 8 bucks a gallon is just too much for majority of the people. Some of you might say for that money, I should go with race gas instead, but unfortunately race gas costs just under $30 a gallon and need to travel to the nearest track in China (a good few hours). No E85's available here, at least yet.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure how spirited your driving is... I have similar type mods as you, and even by calculation on auto-x days I can get still 15mpg. You gotta pay to play. On my 95 talon with a big 50trim, with multiple drag strip runs I was getting about 10mpg, but I was flowing much much more air
I have similar basic mods, dp-tp-exhaust, 272 cams, and alky injection on a stock turbo. I get consistently ~21mpg and that's 60% of the time in city, and driving somewhat "spiritedly" the rest. I feel like your tune could be a little leaner and get you a couple more mpg's...
With my normal commute, stop and go with some high-speed cruising, I get about 20. On straight highways where I can keep the speed up and stay out of boost, I get as much as 25 or 26.
Track days at Motorsports Ranch? I will see 4-6 mpg.

Well in the mountain runs I have to stay in the boost all the time, it seems taking tight hairpins and S curves out of boost make the car understeer and out of balance, it seems not only boring but dangerous at least from my limited experience. I do take breaks though, when I'm stuck behind a bus or a taxi (though pretty rare at late nights), then I wait til there is enough clearance to overtake, gears drop and the next set of 'game' begins
I do agree that the tank lasts forever if you cruise under 3krpm all the time, not surprising since it'll just be a 2 liter with a 9.0 compression.
How much power are you putting down getting 4-6mpg? You must be on at least a 'midsize' turbo...
The tune is not complete yet, but I definately saw improvement on gas mileage as well as some mad torque. I will dyno the car once its all complete (dyno's are 125 a run here, not like 50 for 3 runs in midwest) I will make a thread on review section with before and after sheets and reveal who's tuning.
My eyes are already watering from seeing $100+ gas bills that last me couple hours, I would be living in debt if I start tracking!!! Its about 2 grand for 2 track day trip here... thats a street coilover, or set of nice rims, or a turbo, or any of some insane mods every visit.... I think Blackhawk Farm near Milwaukee was like 150 for full day free run. But I will definately visit once or twice a year as a vacation, before I run some ghost over or turn into one.
