6-spd Evo Rattle in First Gear

I have an '06 Evo MR with the 6-speed, and sometimes the whole front end of the car will rattle severely when I start off in first gear. This is not launching, but starting off, like at a traffic light or something. If I stop, push in the clutch and start again in first, it usually will go away, or if I shift into second gear it will be fine.

It feels like the front diff or something, and I think it only happens until the car is warmed up. I bought it used with 24k miles on it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

It sounds to me like a clutch engagement and disengagement sound related.

Some of it can be clutch shudder in the cold. Typically I have to give it a little more throttle off the line in first until the car warms up some. This also has happened to me in the summer. Just try giving it some more throttle and this will go away. That is just the reality of an AWD car like ours. There are a lot of differentials and mechanics to get in motion, so you have to build a little torque off the line, which can be harder in our turbocharged cars.

I see, that makes sense. I have never driven an AWD car before, so I thought it might be related to that kind of thing.

Thanks all for the advice. (my fingers are crossed that it's not a clutch PROBLEM already!)

Say hello to a new clutch soon my friend. Min did the same on my 03 no 5th gear or high rpm slippage just horrible shudder when taking off. You will be putting in a new clutch sooner then later. It will get worse and worse too

Give it a bit more throttle from a stop until it's warmed up. Also try being smoother (and maybe quicker) when releasing the clutch. That should solve all your shuddering issues.
