For those that have actually dealt with T/C whine...

Ok so yesterday i'm driving back from my family's house for Thanksgiving dinner and i'm on a rural road doing about 55-60mph in 5th gear. When I would let off the throttle slightly while still giving it some throttle I would hear a slight humming or whine coming from behind me (I think). As soon as I would let off the throttle entirely and give full decel it would go away. It would also go away if I gave it full throttle. I could only hear it when I hit the sweet spot on the throttle which was just light on the gas pedal. At this position my exhaust would tone out so I could barely hear it which allowed me to hear the whine, i'm assuming.

I don't hear a whine in any other gear and I don't know if I had this whine all the time and it's just something I just noticed or if it's actually a problem that just arose. All my driveline fluids were just changed by AMS about 5 months ago.

Please do not just jump to conclusions and tell me to go to Shep or TRE. I've searched and searched and there are plenty of useless posts telling the OP to start looking for a new T/C when that was clearly not the problem.

I'm looking for first hand experience with this issue. Thanks in advance!

My Evo has done that since day one, I think it is a normal sound. There is a thread here somewhere with sound clips of a TC about to die...

Yeah I was trying to find a sound clip but couldn't find anything. I was just hoping that this isn't the start of something much worse.

Your fine come for a ride in my car . These cars drivetrains make alot of noise. I was in one EVO with a TC going bad the thing would whine like heck on the highway like a train whistle.

You'll be fine Decel nosies and drivetrain noises are par for the course

Ok good I feel better. I guess I was just freaking myself out. When you start trying to pay attention to noises you notice a lot more than when you don't. It was also about 15 degree's last night which was colder than we have seen in awhile and I now have all redline fluids in my driveline per AMS's recommendation when I got them changed 5 months ago.

As far as I'm told, the /C whine is extremly obvious. I've never personally heard it, but when I first bought the car, I was scared because, let face it, Evo's are mechanical loud cars...

Here's a video that I had of someone's car with a failing transfer case. This is not my car or my video. But I had it downloaded so I thought I'd throw it up to help you sleep at night...

Video

Note: Video needs to be played in Quicktime

Thats exactly what my tc did when it started to go bad. Mine had that symptom for about 6 months before it got worse. But once it gets worse it goes downhill very quickly. When it started it only happened around 60mph, anything less than that it would be fine and anything more than that it would be fine. It was like a switch, everytime I would hit 60 the sound would come on instantly. When the beginning symptoms come in it only comes in when I was on the gas, once I let go of the gas the noise seemed to dissapear. Of course without actually hearing the noise I can't make a postive ID.

Its nice to see my videos are still circulating on the net. I regret using a cellphone to record the video but it was all I had at the time and wanted other members to get a definate soundclip. I have two good video cameras now that would have made videos much easier to distribute if I had them at the time. Those clips are when my drivetrain felt like it was going to fall apart. Everytime I stepped on the gas the floor would vibrate from under me like a massage. If your TC is indeed bad, it wont sound like that for a while.

Well like I said before it only did it in 5th under light throttle. It was weird, just the right position would make a humming. Anything more or less and it would go away. Under normal throttle I can't hear a thing.

Well now i'm confused. I have 90% of people telling me it's fine and one person teling me that's how his t/c started failing.

Is it just a normal sound that rcheung attributed the the early t/c failure but was not related by any means or is it related?

It played for me. Open Quicktime and go to File>Open URL>Paste URL in the field.

The Evo makes all kinds of different noises. I was skeptical about my t-case for a while but the sound that bothered me wasn't anything like that video.

Unless you can have someone hear it that had been through it before it would be hard to tell without a clip. BTW i posted something similar a long time ago and only one or two people thought it was a tcase case also. You have nothing to worry about now. Just see if it get worse. If its already whining and it does happen to be the tc its too late, there is pretty nothing you can do except buy a new case or replace whatever part is broken. Shep recently started replacing ring and pinions so whatever the problem happens to be you'll save a bit of money. When this happened to me ring and pinions were not available so I had to buy a brand new case. But like I said there is nothing to worry about unless/until it gets worse. BTW , what year evo do you have? 03-04s tend to break xfer cases more often than the 05+ ACD counterparts.
