MR Shift knob How to get the patern straight?

I know I am a knob,

but seriously I took the Aluminum knob off my 05 MR and the damn shift patern with that carbon fiber isn't straight, I think from reading other threads that I peel off this sticker / shift patern and there is a set screw?, I really don't want to trash the sticker of the shift patern but it is driving me crazy every time I get in.

It should be straight after you put it back on.Worst case it that if you trash the carbon fiber sticker you could always get another one.

Loosen it about half-way off and tighten it again. I cant explain why because I dont understand it myself. After doing that a couple dozen times it will magically be fine. If anyone can explain why this works I am up for listening.

just spin the damn knob? At the last few spins of the knob its pretty tight so you can get away with loosening it a bit or so

Not true with the metal MR knob. It just stops suddenly. The threads are both metal. How the point where it stops changes????? Who the hell knows

Just use some Loctite 242 (medium strength). Now it comes in a stick, so it wont leak down onto the shift boot.

Put it on the threads, let set overnight.

put some paper inside the shift knob and tighten it where it is aligned.

last few turns are tight enough, just rotate the knob

Lock-Tite works really well, I did this for my S2000 shift knob and no matter how hard I drove it it never came lose.

I finally figured this out....Turn where it is almost tight and posistion it where the sticker is about 1/8th of a turn from the left to being center...pound on it with your palm a few times with a decent amount of force and then tighten it .....keep messing around until you get it right....it took me about 10 mins to get it perfect....I SWEAR THIS WORKS even though it sounds funny.

Yup this is the Aluminum MR knob that just gets tight all of a sudden.

I will try the hitting it with my palm and throwing salt over my right shoulder and any other voodoo anyone can think of, if all else fails I will try the paper and resort to Loctite if all else fails. I can't believe there is nothing in the Mits shop manual.

Anybody else care to share their family recipe for getting this damn thing straight?

I tried the paper trick and it worked great!

I think I probably stretched the aluminum threads when I put it back on with the kung fu grip, she is straight and tight, should make the car perform much better LOL
