brand name vs custom exhaust?

assuming one goes to an exhuast specialist (who has worked with evo's), what is everyones opinion on having a full custom exhaust as oppossed to buying a reputable brand (hks, trust, greddy etc)?

can a custom exhaust in fact be better or is all the R&D of a bigger company more important? this extends to other components as well.

3" pipe is a 3" pipe. As long as the bends are minimized, then there should be no difference.

I think I can expertly comment on this subject. I have a Greddy Ti exhaust which is very high dollar. Let me tell you a straight thru exhaust with minimal bends and no neck downs is as good as any Brand name or high dollar exhaust. I wanted an extremely light weight exhaust and I got it, but at a huge price. If you have access to a mandrel pipe bender and stainless steel 3inch or higher tubing then go for it. Make it as straight thru design/route and you will most like have a better than anything you can buy exhaust. Go for it ! and show us what you made afterwards.

I have been thinking your exhaust question as well, and I agree with the above. At the end of the day, however, i am going with a greddy titanium cbe, w/cobb dp & hfc. I just want a super-light exhaust.

All in all it is your preference. As EVOIXGSR stated...anything that is 3" w/minimal bends is most important.

I hear that the BR exhaust makes to most HP gains out of all the exhaust. They are not a big brand name like HKS or GReddy, so I would consider it to be a custom exhaust that they reproduce and sell to everyone.

Considering most people don't have access to a mandrel bending machine. You can order 3" donuts from road race engineering and make ur cuts accordingly. They stock everything you need to build your custom exhaust the right way. I did a full 3" turbo back on my dsm with a magnaflow muffler for under $350 in pipes, flanges, gaskets, a muffler, and a flex section. I weld, so I didn't have to pay someone to do it, but labor shouldn't cost you a fortune. I have the same plans for my evo. $350 vs. $1000 for a turbo back exhaust? The answer is pretty easy my friend. I've noticed alot of people on this site are mesmirized by big brand names and bling. Functional is functional in my opinion, and exhaust piping is just that...piping. You'll probably be a whopping 15lbs heavier than the cars equipped with titanium exhausts. Big deal, you've got an extra $650 to play with . If you do decide to go this route, spend the money on a quality muffler. NO EBAY N1 "STYLE" MUFFLERS!! Magnaflow and Dynamax are probably the best for the money. (Under $150 if you shop around). Both sound well, and will not fall apart in lass than a year. Good luck!

Don't forget that their are quality turbo back systems for a good bit less than $600 shipped. In the end, it's all about what the end user wants.

As long as it's 3", SS, fits, and has minimal bends, it's fine.

Zeus...where are said turbobacks for under $600? Not that I'm doubting you, but I am yet to see a complete turboback for that price so far.

I've had luck doing custom on several different cars over the years. The key is minimize bends and stay away from CRUSH BENT. Mandrel is the only way to go unless the guy operating the crush is 'that good.'

ebay exhaust is turbo back for 400. 3" stainless, mandrel bend, robotic tig welded, comes with all the correct hardware, test pipe, gaskets, etc.

there have been some epic posts about these exhausts vs the big name exhausts. do a search for ebay exhaust and you'll see what i'm talking about.
