The only reason that I'd feel like after reading it is that it's such classic schoolyard "I'm right, your're wrong! So there!" BS through most of it. And the usual "I didn't really read your post, but I'm going to ***** at you anyway"

SPECTACULAR explanation at the end.

What so good about drifting??
It's usually the slow way around the track...
Its only purpose might only be to entertain the spectators...

I like to see drifting... as much as I like to watch a tv show...

So I'm curious too... why does people like drifting so much?

Drifting sure is fun but definitely not the fastest way around the track.

People get into drifting cause it is an art form.. Everyone knows it is not faster. But that is why drift compatitions are not measured on speed but style and angle.

It is a very challenging thing to do well.

the point of drifting is not to be the fastest around the track. in the D1 grand championships, everything is judged by style and how well you handle the car. drifting really doens't have laps or anything to count how fast your going. it is a timed event, but its more of a time limit then a timed lap. its more of a style event. damn zyounker, you wrote the same thing i did, except you posted first

I'm inclined to agree with JT-KGY. I mean yeah, it looks cool and all, but I don't see the appeal of doing it myself. Maybe it's like lighting your cigars with bills...if you've got the money maybe it's fun. Me...I can't buy tires like that. Hell, I don't even have a RWD or AWD car.

on dry pavement drifting is slow but in the wet,on dirt, snow etc drifting is faster...look at rally racers for example...on tarmac ralys they grip when its dry and drift everywhere else

The purpose of drifting is balancing the car right on the edge of control and chaos. Very few drivers can go out on a track and drift every turn.

The purpose isn't getting around the track the fastest, it's style. It's like skateboarding...its not how fast you complete the course but how good you look doing it.

It's not for amateurs to try in parking lots with there mom or dads awd/rwd cars. It's meant to be learned in a closed course. And you ONLY do it on the street away from traffic and when your 100% sure that nothing will go wrong, and even then something will.

I think people are interested in drifting for several reasons. 1) It's different, America and America JR. (Canada) are only interested in speed, and power. So bringing finesse to driving is something new....its kinda like that new girl at school, she's kinda cute, and different than the others, and although she isn't your "type" it's hard to look away.

The other reason is the cars used to do it are dirt cheap. Hands down the best car for drifting is the rps13 (180sx). Since the last build year for that particular car was 1993, most cars are dirt cheap. So getting a car to drift is cheap as the next best car is the AE86, early 80's Corolla. sure the are supras, rx-7s and 350zs that are drifting, but you don't need something like that to drift. It's all about style not speed, and since your car is going to get banged up it really doesn't matter what you drive, rather its how you drive.

It's cheap to do. True tires are *** expensive, but honestly most drifters have a buddy at a tire shop that grabs old used tires for them off other cars and gives it to them for free or dirt cheap prices. The fact is 90% of drifters use 16" rims and although there are 17" rim drifters out there, when your drifting you don't need big rims or tires.

To actually build a drift car you don't need a whole lot. Suspension set up for a 240sx would be springs/coilovers, shocks, strut or sway bar and rims and tires. Done. The 240sx's 150hp engine is more than enough to break traction with the right set-up. You don't need an SR20DET or 400hp to do it. Sure the Signal auto Sil-80 is 400ps, but you don't need that to get sidewayz, average drift car is between 130-200hp. Thats all you need.

Cops don't get all over drifters for doing what they do. They're far too busy busting street racers for tickets of unsafe vehicles or taking there cars in cali, to give a damn about some guy down by the docks doing half donuts in the parking lot. And when cops do try to bust up on it, what are they going to write you up for? well you don't need to be going over the speed limit to drift, in fact most drifters could do a controlled drift over 35mph. Reckless driving? maybe if your being a dick to them or doing it through an intersection. In a home depot parking lot at 3am though.....worst case scenario is a trespass ticket. So unless your drift car is a unsafe car to begin with, or you have serious negative camber (which you don't even need to drift well) you won't be racking up too many tickets.

Finally it's all about JDM.....and theres nothing more JDM than drifting.......except of course top speed highway battles on Wagan in your 800hp skyline, but thats not happening any time soon.

So really, I think drifting is not only a legitimate alternative to the whole street race scene, but it is also probably safer, cheaper and more fun to do.

Personally I get more of a rush from hanging my back end out around a garbage pail, than slamming on the gas with people inches from my car hoping that theres no cops or copters around.

My next car will be a drift vehicle.....AWD Drift Evo

If the point of drifting is a balance between control and chaos...
I dont see how that is safer than racing.... where it is all about
being in control.... but I do agree that location is one very
important key....

I agree that it's a lot like skatboarding.... or even figure skating...
(ok, just kidding there).... thats why I like to watch but not
trying to do them....

Btw, with all the parts in mentioned above.... couldn't you also
build a capable track or autocross car??

I guess no one here has seen a race down a mountain in Japan. They drift on those hairpin low speed corner. Their faster they grip.

Wicked, you beat me.
Drifting is faster in some instances; mostly when it comes to turn radius problems in low speed corners. The fastest driving is actually with a small slip angle, but most wouldn't consider it drifting. The less grip the surface provides however, the greater the slip angle that provides ultimate traction. Otherwise you wouldn't see rally cars drifting.
