1st gear
I love the fact that my Evo is louder up front than in the back. I have an RS. Louder than your cars. No sound deadening on the firewall.
When driving normally, 5k is my normal shift point in gears one through four. My throttle application is low to moderate. I have the occasional WOT runs, too, of course.
Remember, guys: You're not driving an Accord or Camry. I guarantee you, if you took the exact same throttle application that you use in a normal car and applied them to an Evo, you'd be surprised at how much faster you'd be going than you are currently in your Evo.
Why buy a car like an Evo and drive it to a similar pace of a much lesser car? Enjoy the quickness of your Evo now. Get your money's worth. Please! The car can handle it. Why can't you?

When I first got the EVO, for the first 500 miles or so, I tried not to rev past 5k. After the engine is broken in (after the original 500-1000 miles on the ODO) it is totally ok to rev it. Of course when the car is still cold, I drive with light throttle and shift at 3k max.. . However, when it is warmed up all the way, I usually open the throttle half way if not more, and my shift points are at 5k. I take it past 5k usually at least once a day! Even in 1st gear... I dont consider that abuse, the EVO can handle this type of power, that is why DSM used a tiny 2.0L with a crazy turbo..
Have fun with your car and dont worry as much.. This reminds me of myself a long time ago! Dont worry! Enjoy your car...

I believe that EVO X means that in a regular car such as a camry you'd have to apply a lot more throttle for a longer period of time to get to your desired speed, in my suburban you have to be on that thing hard just to keep up in traffic or get off the line, like 3/4 throttle and up. I think that is what he means correct me if im wrong. oh and imo drive your evo like an evo should be driven even if its a dd

please guys...stop the whole trying to be cool deal and grow up
it's just getting old and played out
actually the opposite of what you said is true...cuz camrys and such are automatic and they change gears a lot faster.....you have to step on it more in the evo in order to keep up...to go faster than them you have to totally step on it so the turbo kicks in hard...i guarantee those other cars are in 2nd gear going into 3rd before you even shift to 2nd...i'm not talking about a drag race or anything here so don't get confused....just talking about normal everyday driving...of course the evo will be faster if you rev it up to 7k in each gear but noone drives like that on a regular basis...at least noone that is sane...lol....

i know what he's talking about....the car sounds like it's gonna blow up when you rev high in first gear...haha...it's no harm to the engine but it's just so loud you think it's gonna blow or something...i never rev it that high in first...maybe like 3000rpms....there is just no need cuz it's not like your really moving faster if you go higher than that...just barely....best to go ahead and change to 2nd before you try any changing lanes or whatever.....to me the best gears to perform moves are 3rd and 4th.....first and second are too short and 5th and 6th are too long...lol....i dunno...maybe you get the point of what i'm saying....normally i change out of first gear at like 2500rpms and every other gear at 3000rpms....this is just if i'm driving normally....of course you know if you're on the track or something you might want to go higher with your revs but i just use mine as a daily driver.....actually i think the highest i've been in any gear was like 5k....i don't go around reving it past the redline like alot of evo owners seem to do...that's just ragging the car out to me...i dunno..just my opinion...i mean if your on a race track or something that's different....some people bought the evo to be a racecar...others like me got it to be a daily driver and want it to last...haha
Bold 2. Again, you're never in the powerband. You're only in the Evo to be in the Evo. I need more than that to be impressed and wowed by the Evo's true prowess.
Bold 3. That's unbelievable. Why all the restraint? The car can handle the rev'ing. You're choking your car before it can get a full breath.
Bold 4. I also want my Evo to last. I love it so much that I plan to keep it for a long, long time. Maybe for my entire life. I wish you could drive with me so that you can see that I'm not ragging on my car or trying to be cool. I'm responsible and smart. Understand that the car can handle speed in all directions. Remember, you're not in a normal car anymore. Essentially, you're driving a poor man's supercar. At 50 percent, the Evo is quick. I'd say you're driving at under 10 percent. You might as well swap out your drivetrain for a 2.4 liter Ralliart's. You wouldn't notice any difference.

i'm not sure what this means....i actually apply the throttle more in the evo than i would in a normal car...not all the time but more often than i would in a normal car..you have to in order to get the turbo to spool...but i don't go around at wot all the time or anything...lol....i mean you can reach full boost at like 1/2-3/4 throttle and like 3k -4k rpms.....i probably drive more conservative than the average evo owner for the most part....but i do get on it every once in awhile...

lol...you are totally missing my point dude....i agree with what you are saying...i'm just saying i don't drive like that all the time....i was just addressing what the other guy wrote...i know if you step on it the evo will go...i've done it...i was just talking about during normal driving in traffic and such.....you can't really floor it like that when someone is in front of you....i'm not in an evo just to be in an evo....how am i choking the car.....it doesn't matter...you don't have to go full boost in every gear.....you're saying you should drive like that all the time?......you can't really drive like that anyways..there are speed limits and such...lol...i mean at times yes such as making a pass or pulling out in traffic but not all the time...geez....you probably get 10 miles a gallon if you drive like that all the time....i can shift under 5k and not have any turbo lag...actually the the boost tapers off as the rpms get that high so again i don't understand what point you are trying to make
i gotta ask...if you're so interested in drivng fast all the time then why are you gonna get an x like your name says?...shouldn't you save up for a vette or something....

ya if you look at the torque curves for each gear, its better to shift from 1-2nd by 5,000 RPM otherwise your loosing power, after that 7,000 rpm shifts are the best.
I shoot for a 4500 shift in 1st gear,
I shoot for a 4500 shift in 1st gear,
another thread that has gone to the dogs....

Oh, yeah. Your point. I understand. A lot of it depends on where you live. Some areas have more traffic than others. I live in an area that has a lot of driving room. Far too many straight roads, though. Ouch. I drive much differently if I'm stuck behind a butt-load of traffic. Rarely if ever in boost or up high on the tach. Under-driving an Evo is unavoidable if in bad traffic or if you're warming your car up.

That is more true with the VIII. You're still pulling in first and second above 6k in the IX. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
