1st gear

Last week i was driving me EVO and i was trying to change a lane on this 2 lane street, i was at a stop light, so when the light turned green i kind of jump in first and revved it to 5rpm to hop on the other lane in front of the other cars, it felt like the engine was really working hard, is it me or the first gear is really short and works the engine really hard? I never revved it to 5rpm in first gear, should i be worried?

Thanks guys

I can't figure out what you're trying to say or what the problem is.

Sounds like your two step at work. It does sound different than bouncing off the rev limiter. You should never do it to switch to another lane.

I just feel that when you in first gear and rev up to 5000rpm it feels like the engine is about to explode; it sounds like the engine is really working hard. it doesn't feel like that in all other gears.

+1 . 1st is a short gear to begin with and is even shorter when your putting your foot through it. Esp with our cars.

It's just the opposite; the engine is not working hard at all in first.

That is a great way to really shock the hell out of your drivetrain I would NEVER do that if I was you. Also when you say you have never revved it to 5k in first gear you mean you have never had a redline pull ever?

The 1st gear isn't one that I would really get on. I do it in 2nd or 3rd if I want to pass. Shift fast and easy.

1st gear is for starting from a stop only unless you are running down the drag strip. If your car is already rolling anything faster than 3 or so mph just put it in second. If you need extremely quick acceleration rev match with the clutch out and then put it in gear (aka double clutching), but there really should be no need on the street.

And load is higher for higher gears, aka your engine is working the least in first. If you are just talking about getting off the gas in 1st gear it might sound strange with the car revved out, but its just as easy for the engine to engine brake as it is for it to accelerate.

HAHA i rev out first gear in my car...
i hit 22 psi by 3k RPMS though..

I consistently pull on my buddy's IX MR (stg1 no cat) to my back wheels in 1st and 2nd gear..

the 2.3L motor makes first gear a real option while autocrossing (stock turbo)

i know what he's talking about....the car sounds like it's gonna blow up when you rev high in first gear...haha...it's no harm to the engine but it's just so loud you think it's gonna blow or something...i never rev it that high in first...maybe like 3000rpms....there is just no need cuz it's not like your really moving faster if you go higher than that...just barely....best to go ahead and change to 2nd before you try any changing lanes or whatever.....to me the best gears to perform moves are 3rd and 4th.....first and second are too short and 5th and 6th are too long...lol....i dunno...maybe you get the point of what i'm saying....normally i change out of first gear at like 2500rpms and every other gear at 3000rpms....this is just if i'm driving normally....of course you know if you're on the track or something you might want to go higher with your revs but i just use mine as a daily driver.....actually i think the highest i've been in any gear was like 5k....i don't go around reving it past the redline like alot of evo owners seem to do...that's just ragging the car out to me...i dunno..just my opinion...i mean if your on a race track or something that's different....some people bought the evo to be a racecar...others like me got it to be a daily driver and want it to last...haha
