You should try to use as little oil as possible on the thing. The aerosol spray can is the only way to go. Furthermore, for the oil in the spray can to flow properly in a fine mist, the temperature must be high enough. If it is too cold it tends to form big globules instead of a fine mist.

What I do, and I do the same thing with aerosol cans of spray paint, so that the spray leaves the nozzle in a fine mist is the following: On a stove top heat a couple of inches of water in a saucepan until it boils. Immediately remove the saucepan from the burner!

Once you've taken the saucepan with hot water off the stove, then place the aerosol can into the hot(no longer boiling!) water for a minute. This allows the colloidal, gloppy oil in the spray can to break down evenly, into a finer, tiny mist.

Shake the can. Apply the spray onto the top, or outer surface of the filter, from a distance of about 8". Spray in only one direction along the seams or ridges and don't return spray over the already sprayed folds. Do about 4-5 ridges in each sweep and keep track with your thumb so as not to overlap. Just get it dark pink, not grenadine red.

Afterwards, I go back over the sprayed filter and lightly blot it with a towel. This is just the way I've always done it. Otherwise you always end up with a tacky, gooey filter and a coated MAF screen.

Sell your car and buy a civic. If this simple task is that hard for you to do then you don't deserve to drive an evo.

aaaahhhh yes, now I remember why I don't post in evom any more. Thanks for the help there buddy I guess you could not answer the question either. And I did not ask "How to Recharge a K&N filter" I never stated it was hard, just about the amount of oil I should put back on.

Anyways THANKS to everyone that helped out. By morning both sides were red. The little oil I put on did soak all the way through, I guess I just did not wait long enough.

As it turned out, while I was getting my car tuned, I bought the cone style k&n filter from the guy (was a great price), LOL.

All this work for nothing. O well, it's up for sale if anyone wants it.
