E brake, need help!!

ok so i havn't driven my Evo in a lil over a week and my E brake seems to be stuck. when i disengage the lever it feels a lil sloppy...i took the arm-rest console off and it's nothing to do with the cables inside the cabin....is there a way to manually disengage it at the wheels (or anywhere else)???? any help is greatly appreciated!

Inject some water on cars rear discs and move the car backwards(R gear)

the sloppy feeling is probably from the cable being still being taught since the ebrake is stuck on. try tapping the ebrake engagement point and it should come free.

Do you garage the car or is it outside?

car is outside unfortunately ( i live in an apt). I took the console/armrest off and the cable isn't taught right behind the lever either. Where is the "engagement point"? I've looked through about 10 other forums of people having this problem but haven't really found any solutions. People saying "don't use it in the cold", but i've used an e-brake in the winter for about a total of 5 years and never had the problem. I even had a car sit from august-december when i went in the air force and it didn't get stuck...anyway, wheres the point you suggest i tap again?

if its cold out then they are stuck. this happened to me in the old civic. only thing to do is let off the E-brake handle and drive it or remove the rear rims and try tapping on the caliper to release them. i just drove for about 2 minutes and the heat freed them up.

when you park don't pull on the e brake handle so hard(winter parking) just give it a couple clicks its not gonna roll away. put it in gear and park also so you dont have to ebrake it.(if you are not on a hilly plain)

i don't pull it hard, usually just past half way up. i've been through colder winters while using an e-brake, but it has been sitting for about 10 days. i can't drive it at all..its pretty stuck. i've "clunked" it out a few times after it sat a couple of days but it won't budge right now...even with trying to launch quite harder than neccessary out of a parking space....i guess ill go try to tap on the calipers and see if that works....but isn't the e-brake a different engagement?

the "E" brake engages the REAR brakes... have you tried tapping on those since you already tried to driving them loose method?

you should only have to pull it up 5 click to be engaged. after you get it free you should adjust it.

i think the manual says at 45lb of pressure it should be fully engaged at around 3-5 clicks. half way up sound to far.

anyway good luck hope you can get it loose with minimal effort tapping them.

well ok i just went outside to tap on the calipers and take a look at the brakes...no one has answered yet, but doesn't the ebrake engage a different brake than the pads/rotors?

anyway, don't think thats the problem now. since its warmed up a lil bit and i actually poked around, it seems as though the pads are stuck or frozen to the rotors....it has rained the last couple of days and got down to below freezing temps last night so i guess thats possible...

putting hot water on them didn't break them free...and i can't exactly go in reverse, im parked in a parking space with a curb behind me (im backed in). guess i'll try more water...would be helpful if it would get over 35 today!

oh and E7, it looks like all 4 are stuck lol....guess i've learned to not let my car sit that long ever again.

The E-Brake is inside the small drum at the center of the rear rotors it's only about 8" across. How bad is it stuck? I would just rock the car a little bit it seams to work for me. The evo has more than enough power to over come the e-brake if you can't rock it just go forward.

thanks for answering...i really don't understand the how tapping on the caliper would free the e-brake...

anyway, like i said, it appears to be the pads stuck to the rotors and not the e-brake...didn't get a chance to really look at it this morning when i first posted....im sure it has enough power to break them free, but will it shred the pads if i do?

You will need to try and rock the car (gently) enough to free the parking brakes. My car does this after washing or after heavy rain, then having the car sit.

When mine finally does break free you can tell they were stuck pretty bad.

You're right that the calipers have nothing to do with this, the parking brakes are small drums . . .

Good luck
