My little shield project.
My little shield project.
Ok so I live in Ohio, I run a Siebon CF hood and no stock diverter (?) and a cone filter. Since the salt and crap is on the road I go thru drive thru car washes semi frequently and well I noticed that my intake filter was damp. Also with the slush and rain after driving in the filter got wet. Well it made a weird noise when I accelerated after driving in these conditions and I needed to do something about it. Last Saturday I spent about an hour on a CHEAP solution. Here is where I began.
Home Depot 1 piece of 12x12 sheet aluminum 0.019 thickness $7.49.

Stock MAF and Filter.

Mark holes from MAF and drill.

Mark estimated opening for filter.

Cut out opening and trim to fit. (i know it ain't perfect i did it with a dremel.)

Assemble test fit. I didn’t take pictures of this part cause it will change by set up. Example if you have aftermarket ic pipe or mini battery.

Final install.

before you could see the filter thru the vent now you can't.
Here is the cool thing. This cost me $7.49 + tax and about 1 hour to get it in and secured.
Let me know what you think good or bad all comments welcome. this was a tester and i will be redoing this and using a 18x18 sheet so i can make a few mods to it. but i haven't had any dampness that i can tell on the filter since install and i have been thru a car wash and slushy roads.
p.s. i don't know if this is in the right spot or not.

mine is alil neater and i bend the shield to accomodate the stock snorkel. it also cost me no money since i had copper sheets and paint at home... it came out gray in the pic (cuz of the flash) but in real life it matches the engine bay.

including the stock snorkel is a good idea but i also wanted to try to keep the hot air out and that is why i did it from the battery to the radiator. this is V 1.0. updates to come.
thanks for the comments!!!

I dig the shield, I think if it were me I would put a bit of an edge (maybe 2" or so) going toward the driver's side of the car on 3 sides and also try to keep the snorkel (cut another properly sized hole for it). Even with the rubber trim I would probably round the edges, maybe roll them if you can, just to make sure that you don't wind up with a nasty dull blade cut.
Only thing I don't like about the guy with the copper is that its copper, sexy looking, but basically the heaviest, flimsiest metal you could have chosen.
I've been thinking of trying this with a sheet or two of carbon fiber or high temp HDPE.
