Uh, what was the problem? I see you said you lubed the oil filter gasket, did you forget to put it back on after that?

Could you explain a little more?

I went to mitsubishiparts.net and ordered a bunch of part # 'MD356000'. It was marked as yellow status (not in stock but "usually ships in 5-10 days").

A couple of days later, my filter shipment arrived. However the filters are stamped MD031805 as are their containing boxes. On my invoice, however they crossed through 'MD031805' and wrote 'MZ690116'. The 'MD356000' I actually ordered is not mentioned on the invoice. Going back to their site, I find that MD356000 and MD031805 have exactly the same pricing. Conversely, a part # search on their site for 'MZ690116' yields no results.

I'm assuming therefore that the MD031805 and MZ690116 are different part #s for the same exact component, which is the newer revised filter..? (It is black, and somewhat short and fat).

WARNING! The part MD031805 that MitsubishiParts.net will send you when you order a MD356000 is NOT compatible. The filter is MUCH larger in diameter and will not physically fit as the body fouls on a nearby boss.

I just found this out the hard way. My EVO is now out of action until I can source a replacement filter locally.

The dealer is wrong. If you put the two filters next to one another, you'll see the MD356000 is internally constructed like a K&N or Mobil1 (IMO better actually, I've cut them apart.) The MZ filter is a completely different filter, and looks like it came off a Kia, built like crap. The service manager at one of the dealers I called looking for the MD's agreed, and told me to call around and buy all the MD's I could. rolled three filters into one part #, and we got the short end. However, oddly the service manager told me the Evos will continue to come with the MD installed from the plant.

The first two filters I got from my dealer were the 356000's. Now they say that 690116 is the correct one. My Evo came with a 356000. After making the dealer do further research, they say that the 356000 has a 'Toro' designation which they say stands for Toronto...as in Canada. The dealer says the two are identical...one with a US part # and the other a CA part#.

Hate to resurect this thread but, I got the 690116 filter from the dealer also.
I would not say it is crap, different but not crap. Have you seen who they are made by? Denso... I wouldn't say that denso is known for making anything crap.

I've been using Pure One filter # 14459. It's the same as the 1G, 2 G turbo Eclipse. Also Acura and most honda's. They look identical to the one from factory.

I posted this from another forum last weekend after picking up 5 oil filters at the dealership.

I picked up 5 OEM Oil filters yesterday at the Mitsu dealership. When the parts guy gave the filters, it had a different part # which is MZ690116 compared to the ones that I always get which is part # MD356000. I asked him about it why it's different, and he showed me on the computer that the one's he gave me are replacing the MD356000 filters. Not sure how true that is.

Well, I got home and compared the two. Right away, I already can tell the difference. The weight is slightly lighter and the filter design is different compared to the old one.

Here are few pix that I took today

MZ690116 filtration (sorry.. macro shot on my 2 1/2 yr. old digicam isn't that great)

Looks like the mz is less restrictive. This is a good thing for our engines.

The MZ is what I put on my car this weekend. Was a lot different than the one that was on it. It was almost a little to fat to fit, but it just scraped it's way by the adjacent fitting.
