to those with radar detectors..

was wondering if it was just me and my radar.. but i have a escort passport 8500 and it seems like the past few times i go full boost in 5th gear, my radar goes off, but its lasar that says i get hit.. i look around and am pretty sure there is no cop hitting me with lasar cos thats usually really precise and would have gotten pulled over for sure.. so is it a busted radar detector or what... also when i close my garage door it goes off, but thats more understandable

I have a cheapo radio shack hard wired in, it detects excellently, and I haven't had a problem with it.

The escort 8500's do that. You can send them in for a fix for like $40, but its not gauranteed to work.

Its a known problem with that model. The laser function gets out of callibration. If you are still underwarranty they will fix it free. If not its like sixty bux or something like that to send it in.

It's a known problem.

If you have any soldering skills, open it up and change the power smoothing capacitor with an equivalent from Radio Shack. It is the biggest capacitor on the board so it is easy to spot. It took me 10 mins to make the repair and it works fine now.

I might start up a repair service, I could prob do it for $20 including return postage...

It is really fun to drive, although it isn't really in the same league as the Evo. The car has a lot of power and is very light, but has trouble delivering it even via the Quaife limited slip diff. The torque steer is tremendous!

BTW, the Passport 8500 problem is due to electrical interference (perhaps from the ignition system, hence the false alerts under high acceleration), I am told. Replacing the power smoothing capacitor helps because they obviously used some bad ones in the initial design that have worn out over time.
