This is a hard call. Both have their pros and cons. I just went back to an Evo X (had my '03 GSR before) and traded my '03 Z06 in on.

First, I'll say that people who claim the the C5 Z06 is "bulletproof" obviously know nothing of the cars. You all know the pros/cons of the Evo, so I'll concentrate on my Z06 experience.

The Z06 is a beast. I only took it to the track once and that was in 95+ degree weather and we sat in traffic the whole way down. Needless to say, the car was NOT happy being that hot, and the performace suffered. Regardless, the car still pulled 119 traps on pump gas in these conditions. Granted it had LG Longtube headers, a reflashed ECU, and an intake, but that's still pretty impressive in my book for an almost stock car.

The grunt of the LS6 is phenomenal. You can accelerate QUICKLY in almost any gear at almost any mph, and it just screams up top. The handling grip-wise is VERY impressive as well, however, it's not a very flickable car. Comparing the Evos and the Z06 handling-wise, is like comparing a scalpel to a broad axe.

Driving experience, I have to give to the Z06 hands down, if you're looking for a sports car.

The Cons of the Z06:

--Eats rear tires (read: typically $300+ a pop) like a fat kid trying to ration a mini-pack of M&Ms.
--Electonics are sketchy at best. ABS issues with the Body Control Module are common, and died in mine by 24K miles
--Fit and finish is comparable to a Yugo--Chevy Quality shines through on this one.
--Interior looks like a upgraded mid-90s Chevy Truck
--Transmission is weak. Take a peak at the factory synchro keys then compare them to Mitsu ones on a car rated at almost 1/2 the power. There's a reason people often wipe out 3rd and 4th gear.
--Clutch issues. VERY common in these cars with the stock clutch. A book could be written on the subject of the hydraulics letting the pedal go to the floor (no pressure) especially with the stock clutch
--Ease of maintainance--if you think an Evo has a tight engine bay, forget a vette. Also look into changing a slave cylinder swap.
--Gas Gauge sending unit and transfer issues also plauge these cars.

End opinion on this is that while the C5 Z06 is an ABSOLUTE BLAST to drive, I sincerely hope that Chevrolet's Engineer and Quality Control teams made improvements on the C6 Z06s.

If you're looking for something that performs great stock, have money for maintainance, and don't mind it being hairy in even just rain, the vette is an awesome ride.

I was torn between the Evo X and the Z06, but business-wise, the Evo X made more sense and I wanted to go back to another AWD project car.

Good luck with your decision, and take some time to read up on www.corvetteforums.com and www.corvetteforum.com (difference is the "s") to learn more about the Z06.

Since you want it that much, you should go for it. I've never driven a vette before, but have heard lots of good things about it. I assume its performance is very close to a viper but handles better. The torque is addictive. You could drive slow and still enjoying it.

Since you have a DD, I'd go with the Z06. I love the Evo, but the Z06 is simply in another class. Those things can be made amazingly fast with relatively little money. Have it checked out by a trusted mechanic and if everything looks ok I say go for it!

Don't forget to add the cost of sales tax into your equation.

If you're switching cars it will cost you an extra $1,200 for a 20k car at 6% sales tax.

Although the trade-in amount isn't taxed.

Good call, I've never traded in a car. I would think it would really depend on the state you puchase the car and register the car in.

An LS motor is just raw-power when you get into it. Having owned an 04 CTS-V (LS6) and 07 CTS-V(LS2), nothing is like an overwhelming amount of power at your disposal. There's no "lag". It's very easy to get more power out of them with little modification.

I also think the car has a more grown-up look to it. It doesn't scream "boy-racer" just " i am a fifty-thousand dollar sports car ".

I had an Evo 8 I traded for an 03 Z06 that I traded back for my same Evo, 4 months later...

I had my Vette as a DD, gas mileage was great on the highway (30+ in sixth gear)...honestly all in all I wish I still had my vette, I havent seen anyone mention it yet, but if you supercharge the vette you will be base at 450whp easy and up!

The cost for parts can go up as well, $550 to have chevy replace a window motor! Working on the Vette sucked, you have to buy special jack pads to get it on a lift, it was hard to keep clean as a daily driver.

The vette is more comfortable for longer drives as well especially when CC is on!

Buy a Z06, research the differences from 01-04 though, and make sure you buy a nice one!
