Mits vs. Toyota: Resale value..

All:

I own an EVO8 and an MR2 Turbo and I've noticed that Toyota's cars seem to hold their value better than Mitsubishi. My 8 is only 5 years old and yet I can find most of them for 18-20k used. My MR2, on the other hand, is 16 years old and I can find some going for $10-$15k (really mint condition ones). Let's not even mention the Supra which resales for more than the 8/9 used.

Then I look at the parts. You can buy an stock turbo 16G used for about $350.00 and yet, a JDM stock turbo CT20B for the MR2 costs between $750-$900 and it doesn't even push more air than the 16G!

Why does Toyota have better resale value (parts/cars) than Mitsubishi? One would think that the EVO is an even greater legend than the Supra or MR2.

Thoughts?

Everything the OP said is right. My take on it is that Toyota is a bigger and stronger company than Mitsubishi and that's why their cars are worth more even though they may not be THAT much better quality. They are a company that can stand behind their products to a greater extent than Mitsubishi. I personally think Mitsubishi doesn't stand behind their product and support their customers enough and I bet they have denied/voided more warranty claims than any other car company.

Having said that, what about this idea?

Maybe Toyota made those cars and then stopped making them for a reason. Mitsu keeps making the same car!! They went from the Eclipse Turbo (90-98) for several years. Then made a V6 version. Here the EVO is a popularity monster, but they keep making the damn car!! What if they just stopped making it and waited 10 years to make something else? Toyota is JUST now considering bringing back the Supra after 12 long years. Maybe the price of the Supra will go down after they make it??

You wanna talk about Mitsu not standing behind their product? Toyota does the same thing! My wife's brand new camary with all service done at the dealer and still within the 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty, the motor threw a rod. Toyota suddenly became the biggest *******s on the planet!! Finally after arguing with the corporate office and the dealer for 4 weeks, we got it repaired and bam what do you know? Motor threw a rod AGAIN!!

Toyota....what a joke. They make the most reliable cars right? Yeah BS. I will never buy another again.

I heard from my mechanic friend that OBX makes some OEM parts for Toyota now...like the cams on the Tundra, which they had a recall on.

Just wait 10-15 years when someone wants a VIII or IX in great condition, stock, with low miles.

That must be 1 in a million. Hey, everything has it's faults. My 95 camry lasted 100,000 miles with not one single failure. My mom's 02 Camry is up to 40,000 with not one single failure.

Was your camry a 4 or 6?

So the general consenus is reliability on the motor from Toyota? But what about the racing cars? You can find a Camry cheaper than an MR2 for the same year.

I think they will be worthless if Mitsubishi has an EVO 20 out by then...

It was a '03 with the 2.4l 4 cyl same one in the TC's.

I know my incident was very rare but it did happen. I don't think Toyota has the same quality control now as they once did about 5 - 10 years ago. They are producing millions more cars today than they did a decade ago and I am not convinced that their reliability is going to be similar as their older counter parts.

Mitsu for the most part is low on the totem pole as far as reliability, although I have not had any problems with mine so far. Maybe it is their non "go-fast" cars they don't put quality engineering into? Who knows...
