Driving from Washington to Florida
I drove from Orlando to Seattle sans tape and only got one, tiny chip. Fixed it with touch-up paint. Can't even see it. Painters tape won't protect you from a larger chip though. Chances are it will just hold the paint in place until you peel it off. The tape won't harm the paint though. Just wash and wax the taped area after you remove it.
I had the front end of my TB Evo all painter taped up when I drove from South Florida to San Antonio..I wasn't as amazed by how many rock chips it prevented but from how many freaking dead bugs there were all over the tape
So..yea painters tape is worth it

I read somewhere not to put the tape on or leave it on if it starts raining because the adhesive will stick to the bumper.
BTW FL is like a drug, you keep going back for more, and once you think you kicked the habit it bites you in the @$$ again

Definitely keep a good distance behind whatever is in front of you. You may want to consider tape on the front pillars, mirrors, and windshield trim as well. Good for bug control. If you are just planning to cruise, you can minimize the number of bugs that get embedded in your IC and radiator by putting some finer mesh screen over the current screen.

how long does the painters tape take to put all over the front? and how much would one need? I have to drive from NC-AZ and back in a few months, prolly going to go that route.
