Death Whine
Death Whine
So the other day I was driving and I found an open patch of road in Gainesville with no cops around (trust me a very rare occurence) and decided to open her up. At around 5k in 3rd gear I felt something give and the car stopped accelerating well, as if the clutch wasn't grabbing. I tried to get her to pull a few more times but she just stopped pulling well at about 5-6k rpm.
Now whenever I get the car going over 30 a whining noise starts coming from what sounds like the tranny. After a quick search it seems that I have got the dreaded transfer case "Death Whine".
At this point in my Evo ownership experience I am about to drive it off a cliff laughing because I just spent 2200 to fix a freak enging malfunction about a month ago. (A spark plug somehow came loose, popped up out the top end taking the threading with it and tore my top end a new one, while I was going about 5mph).
Point is I am a broke a$$ college student who had to take out 2 credit cards to fix the last problem. I am just looking for any ounce of good news from any of you guys.
I am asking to see if anyone has heard of just plugging along with the Death Whine. I need to get around, and I have been babying the hell out of it (not going over 60pmh and accelerating in a snail like manner). Has the damage been done? Can I go on like this indefinetly? Is continuing to drive it gonna mess up anything else?? Should I stop IMMEDIATELY and fix this?
You thoughts....

You say the car stopped accelerating? What happened after this? Would it only go up to 30 MPH or what? Does the car accelerate like normal now, but just with the whine? It sounds like either a trans. problem or T case problem.
Just as a FYI the guy in that video has apparently been driving around with that problem for over a year
I don't recommend that.. but if you do have the whine change your fluids immediately to rid the case of debris which may further damage it.

also, why was your bill 2200 for a spark plug that popped out? i actually had the same thing happen to my car... ripped all the threads out of it (spark plug was backing out slowly because i obviously didn't torque it down enough). i simply went to autozone, got a tap with a threaded insert, tapped it out, put the insert in, and walla! works like new, cost me maybe 20 bucks (plus a new spark plug, coil, and wire, which was maybe 100). i spent a great deal of time cleaning the cylinder out for metal pieces from rethreading it so it took the better part of an evening.
I had a t case lock up on one of my 450whp dsm's when the rear seal failed at the 1000' at gld, put me into the wall. I took it apart and the transfer gear had welded itself together; I'm pretty sure it was a rear seal failure. I think eventually that is one of 2 possible outcomes, the other being the transfer gear will break making your car fwd and it will kill your center lsd real quick or the front diff will blow up most likely destroying everything. I would not reccomend driving the car, having a tcase lock up is NOT fun.
First off, you need to fond out what is whining, the only way to that is to get the car on a lift, and have a mehcanic use the stethescpoe to listen under the car while its in gear and the wheels are moving.
Then you can tell where the whine is coming from.
It could be just a wheel bearing or it could be your T-Case.
BTW, my T-case has been whining for over a year. It is absolutley dreadful.

I had an issue last week of my ACD fluid leaking into my Tcase and I didnt know till It started whining like crazy and I popped the fill plug off and tons of milky fluid came out. Its not my DD and I already have another Tcase on its way, i was just wondering what would happen if it did give out.
