Selling the evo! What to get??
the man is probably strapped for cash. if he sells his evo for say 20k, and buys an 8k car, that gives him 12k for whatever he needs the money for. simple as that.
honestly, i cant think of any car i would like to have in the 8k price area b/c nothing in that range will even compare to the evo in terms of excitement. good luck

2. Insurance cost (NJ is very expensive)
3. Maintenance costs
IF your going cheap just get an 95 integra

240sx powered by an SR20DET. Shell, motor swap, basic bolt-ons, suspension work (Coilovers, wheels, etc.).
You'd have yourself a pretty quick car that'll hold its own.
It's be around $6-8k.

You sure about that evo swap???? Considering those and the dsm engines have everything on the opposite sides.
+1 The 2.5RS is the only other car I can think of getting if I ever downgraded. I love Hondas but I just can't see myself going back to one because of an affordability issue.
Just because the car is going to be paid off in the approximated 6 months (and thats just anyones guess), it doesn't mean its still potentially the only thing he has of value that he can quickly offload and cover other expenses. So, the less he owes, if anything at all - the better he stands to do when he sells it.
With regards to having 8k to spend on a car - buy whatever you can find with the least amount of miles you can trust man. People telling you to buy an older gen dsm are crazy. If the whole reason you are selling the car is because you need the cash, don't buy a car that could potentially cost you money in repairs. Buy something that you can afford with as few miles as possible. This is all operating within the context that money is the motivating factor for selling the car in the first place. Throw the idea of finding something you are really going to be completely content with out the window and look for something you know will be good to you for at least the next five years. If after you find something with low mileage and it happens to be really appealing in other ways, than good on ya. This of course, is just my suggestion. Good luck.
