Wierd shift light
I bought that autometer digital shift tach / shiftlight combo because it was 52mm and would fit into my triple gauge pillar pod perfect. yesterday I wired it in with the help of an experienced friend (retired mechanic)
I had to figure out how to program it, but even after that I noticed something wrong.
When I'm just barely cruising around it works pretty much perfect. I can watch the digital display and compare it to my tach in the cluster and they read exactly the same.
If it get on it hard and rev up (say past 3500 or so) it starts to read funny. There is a delay and it seems to read out lower rpm than the tach on the cluster (for example tach on the cluster says 4000 or 5000 and the autometer one reads like 2000ish)
It has a power, ground and signal wire.
I installed the signal wire by taking off the black 'mitsubishi' cover on my engine and wiring it to one of the signal wires on the coil above the red camshaft cover.
Is there a better place to get the signal ? After I did my install I read that many people use the tach signal from the ecu instead. Also on the autometer website it says there is a tach signal in the little skinny narrow fuse box in front of the drivers side under the hood. The little spade connector infront is supposed to be a tach signal.
Can anyone give me some tips. I can take pictures if you want to see.

I'm not doing drag but the shift light is absolutely necessary for me. I can never tell where I am on the rpm range because my car gets very loud after 4k (look at my mods below) I don't want to overrev and this light will make shifting so easy (it is very bright) The tach I can turn off but I think it looks kinda cool. Still have the problem though and trying to figure it out anyone else have any input?
For normal driving, I usually shift at 3K rpm. Sometimes I skip gear to avoid shifting through every gears. I go from 1st to 3rd to 5th. Mine's all 3" except the pipe before the exhaust and cat is 2.5" It's gonna cost me at least 500 bucks to get that piece from Works. I'm thinking of HKS carbon Ti cat for that price

or you could just get a midpipe like I did and get better performance for way less money - I have the 5$ cel fix. works perfect for 5000 miles.
Anyways I'd like to keep this thread on topic. I have some pictures I'm going to post just now.

Pics...

Is it better to use the signal from here?????

This is how I got the signal, I hooked it into one of the coil wire harnesses (you can see the blue wire)

Ok, today I tried it... I have a problem.
I think I found the ECU just like you said, behind the glovebox. The thing is I have 3 plugs (green, orange and blue) while the picture on the link you gave me shows 4... Plus from what I can see it looks like some of the plugs have 3 rows of wires instead of 2 like the graphic from RRE shows.
I am really confused.
I tried to take pictures but they came out somewhat blurry because I had to sit the camera flat on the floor and aim up. It was kind of close and out of focus.

Someone please help. How I have it hooked up now it works accurate until the engine revs to about 3000. After that it goes really funny. It jumps all around. I still have it wired to the coil.
Also I checked the ground, I am getting a solid 12.24 volts.
