VIDEO: what is wrong with my car? - HELP HELP HELP

PLEASE READ...

So I'm driving home from a Pittsburgh evo meet and I hear a faint sound coming from the right side of the engine (cam gear side) and I don't think much of it....

So then I get to an exit ramp to go home and then I REALLY hear this sound....and when I come to a stop at the top of the ramp it's basically screaming this terrible rattle sound.....

I drive 3 miles from there home and it continues...clutch engaged, different gears, idling, etc the sound is always there....WHAT THE **** IS WRONG??

Please watch this video clip and help me try and identify what this could be? I'd like to have an idea of what it is or if it's something simply to tighten up....if not, I'll send it to the shop I guess.

THE VIDEO: http://vimeo.com/1136032

It really sounds like it's the cams or cam gears or something but I really can't tell....aghhhhh

Can you confirm where the sound is coming from?

1. Cam Gear
2. Inside of valve cover
3. Water pump
4. Idler Pulley
5. Tensioner Pulley

(For items 3-5, you may need to lift the car and remove passenger tire. Maybe, the cover to reach timing belt.

What is the mileage of the car? When was the last time you replace timing belt and associated parts (water pump, pulleys, timng belt, etc)

For the video, it seems that a rusted pulley!

Holy f*ck! Don't even turn the Evo on! Maybe the valves are saying "Hello" to the pistons?

TURN IT OFF!

=X

I'm not mechanically inclined so listen to the guy who posted above me. =P

It has 29,700 miles...2005 Evolution VIII...

Can't confirm. I'm gonna have a couple buddies stop by tomorrow who know their **** and first we will identify for sure where the sound is coming from.

Check back tomorrow and I'll have a definite answer for you, thanks...

Yeah, it does sound like a bearing has gone bad. I'm guessing the sound is not coming from the cam gear area but instead lower down since that is the side that the serpentine belt runs on. Probably a pully, the AC compressor, power steering pump, or alternator. Surely one of those. Just guessing of course.

Probably time for the shop to get whatever it is replaced though. Hopefully you're still under warranty so it's no issue.

It might help if you got a mechanics stethescope to pinpoint the noise. The engine sounds fine. It definately sounds like something external.

The last time I heard that sound it was caused by the timing belt rubbing the crank sensor - a common problem on IX's.
