supercar: Where is your dealership located? I'm in Central Jersey. I'm interested in the black. If I was to get it from you, I need the high spoiler added on. The Evo just looks wrong without it.

Thats a total of $35,000 then. Are you sure thats a good deal? Take a calculator and do the numbers yourself.

I got clobbered because of the mileage depreciation on my S2000. I couldn't sell it privately because I was upside down. Took it in the shorts, but did ok on the Evo. Plus I got 5.5% for 84 months - payments are small, so I can always double pay and save interest...

Do you know how financing works? You have to pay interest on the car. That interest rate is based on your credit. The rate I got from the dealer offering $1500 off MSRP was 4.24%.

OK, on to the next chapter in my Evo hunt. I'm 100% sold on this car right now, but my family isn't. They wanted me to atleast test drive an M3 before we purchase the Evo. I got to drive my dad's friends' M3 SMG, and it was fantastic. However, I've decided against it because of how much of a pain it is to get in and out of the backseat of a coupe, the small backseats, and the fact that it wont handle New Jersey weather very well.

With the M3 out of the picture, all I had to do was check out an STI before I could say I was 100% sold on the Evo. We checked out three Subaru dealerships, looking for an STI. The first dealership had one, but it was marked up $3000 and they wouldn't go down any further then $1500 over MSRP. They wouldn't even let me test drive the car! I did get to check the car out, and from what I saw, I wasnt impressed. Just from sitting inside it, the seats are not even close to as supportive as the Evo's Recaros. The armrest was too high and far back. The backseats are even smaller then the Evo's. Also, the fit and finish of the STI just didn't seem as good as the Evo. The exterior wasn't winning me over either. I already know the EVO outhandles the STI, so the only thing it really has going for it is the engine. We decided to pass on this one.

OK, next dealership. No STI, they don't have any unsold coming in either. Third dealership. They have one coming in next week and are selling for MSRP. Too bad its coming in next week, and I need to have a car by this weekend. Without a test drive, I've now decided against the STI.

One more thing I have to add in. My little brother is really against me getting the Evo. He keeps trying to sabotage my attempts of trying to prove how good the Evo is to the rest of my family. For example, when we had the car fully loaded with 5 people, he would move his legs around to make it look like his knees were against the back of the seat and complain about how the seats are too small. That, and he kept on saying how much we always buy cheap cars like Hondas and Mitsubishis, and how we need to buy something nice like a BMW for once.

When we decided against the M3, he persisted that we should still get a BMW. Well, the only BMW worth getting besides the M3 is the M5, and that is out of our price range, even used... or so I thought.

My dad used to be a used car dealer 10 or so years back and he used to buy all his cars from auctions, so he knows how the system works. A while back when he was looking for a used 740il he went to a lot of used BMWs and looked around at all their used cars. He says that he saw more then one M5 with around 40-50k miles selling for $35-40k. I of course don't believe him, but I'm going to look into it tomorrow. If I can really find a decent condition M5 for that low, I'll definitely pick it up.

Sorry for the long post, but its not over yet. Some of you may have noticed that supercar offered me two Evos, one blue and one black, for $300 over MSRP. On the way home from work, I just happened to miss my exit and had to take another route home. What else do I happen to see on the way home but a Mitsu dealership with two Evos, one blue and one black? I check it out, and it turns out to be a different dealership (supercar is actually in NorCal), but the salesman agreed to $300 over Invoice on a Rally Red Evo with spoiler and sunroof. I told him that I had to check out the M5 first to see if my dad really saw what he think he saw, but I would 100% be back there by Friday or Saturday and buy that Evo.

So now, I have an Evo with 5 miles tops, $300 over Invoice, or an M5 with 40-50k miles for $35-40k. Life doesn't get any better then this.

rebelzx,

Who is the dealer selling for $300 over invoice? I won't be buying for a few more weeks. So no worries about the red one. PM me.

Does your family realize that an Evo will outperform the M3? Do they want a BMW because of the so-called "status" that they think it will give them? Why are they all stuck on BMW, especially your little brother? Is he old enough to drive? You would think if he's part of the Playstation generation, that he'd love the Evo. Just because people buy Hondas doesn't make them cheap or stupid. It's pretty smart, actually, if they want reliable and high-quality transportation. Why does his opinion matter anyway, is he contributing $5000 towards the car purchase? The car is going to be yours, and you'll be the main driver, right? You should get what you want.

I hear you on everything you say man. They only want the M3 for the "status" it gives it you. I drive a Honda right now, and it's lasted me 4 years and over 100,000 miles, still running like new. It's not like its a slow car either, it's an Accord V6.

Okay, I think it's rather silly to pay $40,000 for a used car, albeit an M5. The fact is, those things are expensive to maintain. You're getting a car with 40,000-50,000 miles on it already, and have no idea how the previous owner(s) treated it. I'd go with a new car, or something sliiiiiightly used.

I feel the same way. I just want to be sure I'm making the best decision on my purchase though and check out the M5. If I feel that it's worth the price difference, and more importantly, if I can find one in good condition for that price, I'll get it. I seriously doubt it will happen though.

You should definitely get better than $1500 off for that car with those miles. The dealer was lying to you about the "special incentive" that would expire. Don't negotiate down from MSRP anyway; you should state the invoice and give them an offer that you think is fair. Try for $300-$500 above invoice.
Uh, dude...$500 above invoice is the same as $1500 under MSRP...

i thought i read a week or two ago of a person claiming they got their's for $200 under invoice. supposedly there is a 2% (off MSRP) holdback the dealers get from mitsu. that equals about $600. any lower than $600 below invoice would be a steal. couple 2 or 3 hundred over invoice is a good area to shoot for.

never heard about a grad discount.

Update: I was going to go check out a few dealerships that my Dad said would have M5's today, but I couldn't. My Mom was feeling really so we rushed home to see if anything was wrong. Lucky for us, she's feeling ok now.

I really want to get this done before the weekend is over so I can enjoy the car, but it looks like I might have to wait on the Evo until Monday right now. I leave Tuesday for Atlanta, and won't be back until September 2nd. I can just imagine how anxious I'm going to be to get back and drive the Evo.
