I normally leave it running. I have noticed some wierd things tho when filling. No CEL's but whether its the cooling fans turning on, sometimes the car will 'lug' when I am filling. Historically I dont like starting and stopping turbo cars. I like to leave them run. I am on my 5th one so far and it hasnt hurt anything. At the autox I have been shutting down between runs now. I used to let it run the 15 minutes or so between runs but now I shut down after 5 minutes. Fuel is expensive and heat is the enemy. I am thinking about getting a turbo timer. These CI blocks hold so much heat compared to the aluminum engines I have had before, that it may make sense.

I got mine in March plus like most of the Ohio Evo drivers I bet your prolly closer to the lake. I just came down (from NE OHio) to Columbus in November and the weather is a bit better. So March in central Ohio is more like April in northern Ohio.
If the engine off things helps I wont be able to tell you if I cel in winter

Dont put it in all the way, I have the same issue at some pumps.

Also be careful, the auto stop at some pumps doesnt work well on the Evo.

I got gas all over me twice now at this one pump

OK it was time today to try out the recommendations:

1) went to a diferent station - pump **** off before the first gallon
2) Pulled the nozzle so far out that it could have been hazardous... pump still popping off
3) Shut off the engine - WORKED. OMG Jammed that baby all the way in filled at full speed.

So there you have it how to put gas in a stubborn Evo.... I am sure theres some science like fuel pump cavatation or tank vacuum or something cool like that. But it totally worked.

Thanks Guys!!!!!

Wow thats such a hazard to fill up with the engine running.

Now that I think of it - I did this ONCE in my Evo and the whole time I was doing this the engine RPM's were bouncing up and down - prob not good for your fuel pump...

Dude read the warnings at gas stations next time... You aren't smoking as well are you?

First car (in 25 years of driving) that I have had too shut off to put fuel in.First car of 5 turbo's in 17 years that I had to shut down a blazing hot turbo charged engine in too put fuel in.

I would have never guessed that putting fuel into a car would be effected by whether its running or not. As for teaching an old dog a new trick, I guess so. Next thing your gonna tell me is that I have to drive the speed limit lol!!!

In oregon it is REQUIRED to shut your car off before fueling. The attendants will NOT fill up your car with it running. It has huge signs on the pump. On modern cars there is usually a gas cap light for when your gas cap is loose. They put this on because of vaccuum that is created in the gas tank. When this is loose there isn't any pressure and makes your car run like crap. I can't believe I'm hearing about someone that fuels while they have their car running. This is why all states need people to pump your gas like in oregon ;p

My 2003 evo 8 did the same thing every time I filled up. I had to hold the handle about half way in and it worked fine.

Why thank you... I love being called dumb. How polite of you. I have finally made it into the most popular category of individuals.

Common sense isn't common.... dont ever fill your car up next to me while Im at the station.

A non properly grounded connection could spark a static connection and we all know what happens when sparks and fuel mix.

Dude, for your own saftey and others around you, shut your car off. Thanks! We're looking out for you and it seems to solve your problem.

dont put the nozzle in all the way...it will stop the flow because of some restriction when filling...just pull it out a little bit and youre good!
