So you think Mitsubishi should have taken in account that people would build the **** out of thier motors, and neglect the transmissions, and therefore should have put a friggen Allison in 'em? Mitsubishi owes it to you to provide you a trans that will handle the enviornment the car is intended to be driven in. You repeatedly flog your car on the track, and/or build your motor to 450hp, it's on YOU to upgrade your trans. Problem is, an upgraded trans isn't as sexy as a big turbo, and usually doesn't make your car go any faster. People therefore don't spend the money on 'em
BTW.. if you think these trans' are crap, go drive a Porsche with a 915.

How much did a the shep rebuild cost?

How much is the dealer charging you to re-install the tranny?

actually, no argument there. I agree. I'm just saying that from past experiences w/ other cars i was lucky enough to not run into issues like this. Meaning the variable was the car since im the same person "driving the **** out of it". And yes i modded the Honda and Toyotas w/ high output turbo setups as well. (im still on the stock turbo for christ sake...) I think the motor was extremely over-engineered in regards to its stock output. Just wish the transmission was Equally built as such, thats all. An allison? hardly... but a Getrag wouldn't be too much to ask. Especially for a 35-38k car.

Then again... i had wished for this on DSMs way back 17yrs ago when i was in highschool... lol...

im sure there are some stronger than others (marginally speaking of course) just like any mechanical device... some built to better tolerances/quality than others. No two can be totally 100% identical.

BUT... trust me "I" broke this transmission. Just like i broke my 1st stock one before it. Im just saying i haven't broken so many stock transmissions before w/ other cars driving the same manner etc... even making more power. It was just a gripe...

i've always wanted a better shifting and stronger transmission, and i guess this forced me to do it in a way. Haha... too bad it doesnt make my car any faster and broke my wallet!

this is my first built transmission from Shep... and so far the cust serv from John alone is worth going to him!

2003, stock trans, 272 cams, 23 psi, injectors, fuel pump, full O2 housing back exhaust; drag racing, auto-x, and hard spirited mountain runs. Everyday my car sees 7000+ rpms.

118k miles.

No trans problems.

well, the good thing is Shep is price matching identical work now from other shops. If you've paid attention to his pricing... its dropped significantly over time. I actually paid quite a bit more than the standard rebuild due to options and also replacing some of the gears sets.

just hit up Sheptrans.com (the basic rebuild is very affordable. if u can stay away from the options, haha! )

I bounced back and forth between Shep and TRE... and decided on Shep at the end. John seems to be an honest guy and walks you through what needs to be done etc. Very straight forward. Fast service, immediate shipping.

exactly... there are in fact more people w/ no problems. There are some like me that have had bad luck though. Yes, i drive hard... but i ALWAYS do full lift shifts, clutch always goes all the way down. I never "power shift" etc... in fact i shift rather slow because i was never confident in the stock synchros. Im sure the 5700rpm launches at the drag strip (btw, less passes than all my friends for sure..i rarely go) contributed to it... What i REALLY think contributed to it is my double clutching in 2nd gear (40 rolls) to get the car to "jump" forward during a (spirited run) It works fantastic... but im guessing its like a repeated mini launch which played havac on the output shaft. (Shep said it was physically twisted!)
I can assure you THAT practice will no longer be done!

btw, I heel and toe (revmatch) every corner, every down shift, everyday. It's how I was taught to race and drive. That's probably why my tranny is still sound.
