EVO 9 takes another tranny dump

well, so im just now getting home in the morning... after a several hours waiting on a tow. Long story short, during a spirited run... i go into 4th... to find it "missing". I find this out because my revs shoot up like im in neutral and i can move into 4th and back to neutral w/out the clutch... its like nothing is there. Add on top of that im locked out of every gear. I coast and restart the car, get it into 1st and 2nd (test 4th and its still missing..) and pull over. The clutch is making a whining noise when engaged. So anyways i assess that the clutch is a goner and so is my new 2nd transmission that was warrant'd earlier. Nice... Im going to send it off again in hopes they'll cover it again. I didnt do anything that the car shouldnt be able to handle. Reving to redline and a full lift shift and not even shifting fast. These transmissions suck so bad i swear...

Or it could have been installation error cuz I don't think ppl break trannies after a couple of "spirited runs" on the streets, especially on a new tranny.

I thought the 5 speed had the reputation of being rock solid even with high horsepower.

Dan just barely after 3 years of running 11,10,9s in the quarter, broke.
3 years of over 500whp.... on the stock transmission... I dont know what to tell you... our 5 speeds are some of the strongest around.

once again ...something is missing. Transmissions "rarely" just fail...either rape, no lube was the cause. Or some more than spirited driving. How bad could an install be?

My tranny isnt bad, But I am probably going to take it out and send it to shep anyways to get the 05 VIII 4th gear along with a double synchro 5th since I do alot of high speed roll races where I am...

On the other hand, I did hear alot of people complain about the 06 trannies having a fifth gear grind, which is starting to be aparent with me... But whatever, You pay to play!

I have 12k on my IX MR and it is a very nice shifting tranny. I have had spirited runs but probably nothing like most (dragon two times and around here local). Everytime I drive it I think about how my transmission is nothing like I read on here. I have the 6 speed w/ TBE, drop in, and Works flash and she is garaged and driven on the weekends. If it is a new trans then and you are the only constant between the two then maybe it is the way ur driving. Good luck with the repair.

I would have to agree if is the 2nd NEW trans and it went again it might be your driving. Its possible it was a install error though. When was the 2nd tranny installed? If it was just just recently installed then it could be error but if its been a while its most likely otherwise.

Oh BTW, My car is garaged and only comes out on the weekends, BUT it only comes out to race EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND. I got the car in Feb of 07, do the math... I beat the ever living crap out of my car, still kicking just fine. Only issue I have right now is if I shift TOO fast into fifth, it slightly grinds.

Dont blame Mitsu for your crappy driving skills or your mechanics inability to do something right!

Dan

interesting... and why would you be so quick to assume it was driver error? Im 34 yrs old. Have been driving cars since i was 15. Have been involved in drag racing and road racing... even motorcycles. I know how to drive the car. Again, like i said these were FULL LIFT shifts. Nothing crazy. Nothing "forced". Trust me if i was doing something that would grant such a failure, i'd be the first to admit it. Its not a big deal. I strongly believe there was an install issue. And no its not "MY mechanic" lol..... it cracks me up how you people jump to conclusions and start talkin **** when you dont know ****. For your information it was my local DEALER who installed it and it was because of a TSB on the tranny.

btw... from the many cars i've driven and owned... it is "my" opinion that these transmissions really are NOT up to par w/ the power the motors can make. They suck. Sorry. Hey, i love my evo just like the next guy.... but im sure we can all agree they should have put a stronger transmission in these cars. The synchros suck... you name it. A stout Getrag would have been an obvious choice for such a car.

w/out any kind of performance rebuild? A shep or TRE trans? im talking about a bone stock Mistu tranny. I highly doubt it could handle multiple 500whp runs for 3 yrs. You mean a few runs w/ the car down for a year? adding up to 3 years? Seriously once a week for 3 yrs 500whp on stock trans? launching it etc? well.... if so... then you've got one sick trans.

maybe mine is weak. who knows.... and TRUST me.... i am just as skeptical as you guys in regards to WHY it broke. it surprised the hell out of me too.
