Found out the hard way the undertray does NOT have to be removed to change the oil
For some reason I thought I had to remove the whole undertray to change the oil on my Evo. So the good news is, I got the oil changed with M1 syn. 10w30. Bad news, have 3 pop-screws that wouldn't go back on. Then the just plain stupid news... I DIDN'T HAVE TO REMOVE THE UNDERTRAY AT ALL TO CHANGE THE D@MN OIL!!
At least I was able to get intimate with removing the undertray and what lies between it and the bottom of the engine.
It appears as if there's a temperature gauge in the oil drain plug... is this on all 2003 Evo's? When I got the car it had the Mitsu aftermarket gauge cluster with boost, volts, and a temperature gauge that isn't marked as to whether it's water or oil temperature. On normal driving conditions it reads about 72 degrees C.
Oh well... guess I don't have to worry about saving up for an aftermarket undertray afterall to make oil changes easy!

yeah i dont know why you thought you had to take the undertray off, once you get underneath you have clear access to the oil plug and filter. Since it seems you have the mitsu triple guage pack, thats normal to have the temp line to the oil drain plug. That is for your oil temp for one of the guages.
if you want to get that undertray back on, I've replaced some of them screws by going to Autozone. You live and learn, make sure you look, wait a second, before you tear something apart if unnecessary.
taking that undertray off looks like a PITA. I'm planning on replacing my downpipe soon would I have to take off the undertray for that? Last time I was underneath, I think i had access to the downpipe bolts but not sure if I would have enough room to get up there.
