New to the site, I have a question

Hi guys, I'm new to this site, I've lurked around here before but never really posted.

I currently do not own a Evo, but I'm looking to get into either that, or a STi. But I have a few questions regarding the engines on STis and Evos. From a lot of reading and talking to car owners, seems like the boxer engines for STis tend to knock more often than Evo motors and have more problems occur.

My decision on which car I'll want will depend on which engine can handle more power/revv higher/knock less.

I spoke to a STi owner once, and he said Evo motors can handle more boost than STi motors (stock to stock internals), BUT a STi motor can put out more raw power from the motor. I'm wondering if any of you can confirm this for me or correct me. Any other information will help also for those of you who decided over one car instead of the other.

thanks

4G63 can handle more power, rev MUCH higher without significant mods and knock will depend on your tune.

I don't buy the "more raw power" part one bit at all. My local car forum that I'm a part of has oh....7000 subarus easily. Quite a few STi's, and literally on one hand can you count the number of guys making the numbers and time slips with fully built cars that more then a few evo guys around here make with fairly mild builds, bolt ons mostly. Look around the Suby boards, try to see how many 500whp+ cars there are. Then look here, 500whp is no joke, but its becoming sort of common place. Seems like Buschur is rolling out a 500+whp PUMP gas car almost twice a week. The Suby will cost more to mod as well, and your simple bolt ons may not get you as much bang for buck as the evo will. A lot of the guys around here who think they have badass cars, have to spend a ton of money, and use 30r's to achieve what we do with our stock 16g's

To start the STI's motor is a 2.5l (i believe) compared to the EVO's 2l. So that right there means it can move a bigger turbo. On the other hand the STI's engine is Aluminum and the EVO's is Iron which means it's stronger. Also the STI's engine is a bit more complicated and the EVO's is more straight forward.

If I'm wrong please correct me guys

Pretty much of what you said is what I've been told, I guess there's more truth to it than I thought. thanks for the input

woaw Aluminum? I hope you're wrong haha. cuz then I'm definitely not going to buy a wrx. and as for the comment about the boxer motor being complicated, taht was also my thought on the motor. I wouldn't trust a WRX motor to handle high revvs for very long.
