Can magnesium be polished and if so has anyone ever seen a evo with a polished valve cover

 

I'm not sure about polishing magnesium, just get it chrome dipped if you're going for the bling bling.

 

chrome cost money though.. Polishing only cost time

No you cannot polish Mg. A magnesium alloy can be polished, such as an alloy with aluminum, but the polish is really only affecting the aluminum or the clearcoat over the alloy. You can however remove the oxidation from magnesium and clean it. Whether or not it gains any luster is probably going to be subjective.

Off subject but that is a beautiful true quick change rear-end! I put one in a '29 ford hotrod I worked on for a while! it sounds MEAN driving down the road with straight cut gears!

On subject, I have seen Mg that looks polished, but it always is slightly dull looking, it never had that shine which is possible with aluminum... Give it a try, worst thing that can happen is you dont like it, and then get some hightemp paint and go after it, or save up and you can get it powder coated.

 

I dont know what our valve cover are made of but Im pretty sure what ever it is can be polished.. I got tired of those two stupid looking ridges on the top there and decided to grind them off.. Here is what the raw metal looks like..

^^true it does but with me I didn't care that much and I didn't have a good grinder to sand it down so I took mine to a powder coating shop and paid them 70 bucks and got it back all nice lookin.

Pay to get it done. Don't use spray paint of any kinds just won't look as nice.

IXs have the magnesium valve cover, VIIIs have aluminum
