I would go with the Evo for a couple reasons:

1) Praticality - You can go take your kids and wife in the car and go grocery shopping with room to spare.

2) AWD - Safety, nothing safer for family than a fast rocket with grip.

3) Turbo - Sorry, but if I get something for more than 20k, it better be freaking boosted.

4) Repair Cost - Self explanatory. Porsche is just a label, maybe an luxury icon, but thats about it. (Like everyone else said.)

Anything I'm missing or something I posted thats incorrect? I don't know much about Porsches, but I do know that Evos have better handling over Porsches.

I would suggest driving both and seeing what you like.

Read the faq area of the forums here. The noobie section. The factory ECU is very capable of turning the car into pretty much what you desire up to a certain point. Definately much more user friendly than our 1100.00
"reflash" on our Porsche

There are other cars in the 20-30 price range that would fun to own... Personally I would consider the best vehicle available. Oh and a Porsche looks real good in a turbo body to me. I would love to own a Carerra S some day.

I work at a Porsche dealership in parts...you would get royally screwed as far as just OEM is concerned. power to $$$ the evo wins, unless you are looking into a 996 turbo...

Not to blow smoke up Porsche's ***, but the real Porsche ended with the 993 (air cooled). I remember reading an old post here about a member that owned both cars and could not decide which one to sell... Now that is a good problem.

Unless it's a turbo, GT 3 or something similar, the Evo is the way to go.

My rule of thumb is not to pay too much for underpowered cars. I think the 996 (unless it's the GT2, GT3 or turbo) fits that underpowered category.

I disagree. The Evo is far easier to maintain cornering speeds than any rear-engined Porsche.
