evo 8/9 vs porsche 911 carrera (996)
evo 8/9 vs porsche 911 carrera (996)
as the title says, im having a hard time deciding which vehicle i want at the moment. its frustrating because to me they are both even and both has something the other doesn't.
my wallet is between 25k-27k maybe 30k if i want to push it.
the evo i would prefer, would be a 9 but an 8 would do just fine
the porsche 996 would be 1999-2002
hopefully you guys can give me some insight on both sides, such as straight vs straight, corners vs coners, etc. i want something that would be good in a straight line and corners.
Thanks

If $30,000 is stretching your budget, stay far away from any 911. The early M96-equipped cars had a lot of intermediate shaft issues and still have rear main seal issues which can be a costly repair. The engines and transmissions are modular units so many repairs aren't rebuilds but rather you replace the unit as a whole and both are exceedingly expensive.
This doesn't include all of the niggling issues that can nickel and dime you on a nearly decade old German car.

ya i read about how costly it'll be replacing parts. but i dont know how often does it actually happen when you have to replace the engine or the tranny. i also read how reliable they are and very few if any had any major problems.
also if i were to get an evo, im not sure if the owner took god care of it or not. that goes for both cars i guess. how costly is it to repair parts for an evo?

Have you factored in Maintenance costs? the rear tires alone in a Porsche can cost over $500 and any major service such as belt replacement and clutch will have to be done at porsche dealerships since not many people know how to work on a rear engined car. And believe me they will charge you an arm and a leg.
I am stationed in Germany with the Army. Trust me, if you want a good straight line and superb cornering vehicle, an EVO is the way to go!!!
I have VERY basic mods on my 9 and I eat porsche's alive! The autobahn is a great place to prove it too!
The only porsche I have found here that has beat me in a straight out run was a GT3. Caymen's, 911's, and even the older Carrerra's can't hang. And not to mention like stated above... maintenance cost alone will keep your wallet full of cobwebs.

that two is not a same category at all. you might out run the 911/ assuming is not a turbo/ so you can be faster with less money , but the two car is night and day. Bad comparision.
Worked for Porsche, not impressed at all, buy the evo.
The only Porsche that will give an evo trouble would be the GT3 or turbo 911s. Any other (C4, C4S, Carrera, Cayman, Boxster) can't hang at all with evos. Any and all services done on the porsche is an engine out repair. They put it on a lift and drop the engine out of it. At least $1k for any engine repairs.

The Evo is a lot more fun to drive than any Porsche I've driven. Admittedly, I have driven only (several different) older 911s, but if I were you I would definitely drive a 996 and an Evo and see which feels more exciting.
None of the older 911s I drove had as much excitement and immediacy, especially at lower speeds. The pedals were bottom-hinged and felt a little funky, the shifter was taller and sloppier, and the steering was looser. They just had something of a VW feel, if you know what I mean. And I suspect the 996 is so smooth that it does not start feeling "exciting" until you're way past the speed limit.
Again, you really need to try driving both. I can almost guarantee the Evo will prove to be more fun, especially at legal speeds.

996 didn't really get much love till after 01. So you would really want to look for 2002+ which will put you into a different price range all together. I owe both a Porsche and Evo, cost for performance there is no comparison. (Evo wins hands down). Styling goes to Porsche.
