What are these "holes" on the valve cover? (pics included)

What are these "holes" on the valve cover? (pics included)

I never really figured out what these "holes" were on the valve cover. Does anyone know. I'm guessing it's some kinda breather hole.

There's one on the front and back...

I believe those are the drainage holes for the center gallery. (for water i believe.)

Right, its just a drain. If you pull the cover you will see its a tube that runs through it. Its not actually holes in the VC.
