Very Low Mileage!

Judging by the mileage thread a number of us do not drive are evos very much and I seem to fall into this club. My IX has 15k on it and that is with 3 round trips to the NC TN area. It sits in my garage for more than a month at a time without moving, I haven't done anything special except put a battery maintainer on it just because it didn't start one time and I am paranoid about killing that 200 buck optima battery. I live in SE Louisiana so the climate is mild and it doesn't see anything but sunshine when I do drive it. Anybody taking any extra maintence steps on your cars that sit for extended periods of time? If so what are you doing?

I live in North East Ohio where we get lots of snow, and they salt the crap out of the streets.
My EVO is my toy, not my daily driver, so it gets garaged from late Nov. to mid March.

Before I garage it I fill the gas tank full (less chance for condensation in the tank) and slightly overinflate the tires.
During the winter I charge the battery every other week with a 500Mah charger for 12 or so hours. I have a mini battery and this has kept in top condition.

Every other week (twice a month) I start it up and run it for 20-30 min. (parked) Run the A/C turn on the lights, run the windows up & down....run the electrical stuff.
Usually at least 2 or 3 times on a clear, dry day, I'll move the car just to circulate the oil in the Diffs.

Hope this helps, if I lived someplace with a mild climate, I'd drive it all the time!

Thanks for the info and I wish I could drive it more but 3 kids wife and I would never drive the hell out of it for work that is why they give me a car. What your thoughts on changing fluids by time and not mileage. I do it by mileage so maybe one oil change a year.

Few things: Get rid of the battery tender and purchase the "Moroso" battery switch (you will never change another battery again), keep the tires over inflated , and use Stabafuel during storage.

^^ HaHa - true! - Mind you, I drive it like it's supposted to be driven, just not in the winter

To the OP, I'd say follow the schedual for the Diffs, and change the motor oil at least once a year.

As for the battery switch, even if I remove the battery & put it on a shelf, a few months of no charge, and it'll be dead.
Having been a motorcycle mechanic (lots of storage time on bikes) I've seen first hand the effects of fuel stabilizers - don't use 'em.
If we are talking real long term storage (years) drain the tank, and purge the fuel system.

It isn't my only car if I could only have one car I wouldn't be able to have an evo. Just wouldn't work with my job or family all that being said I am about to drive it now. Taking my daughter to girl scouts the kids love that boost feeling like something supernatural is pushing the car. Thanks for the input everyone I am already doing atleast the one oil change a year some years even two depending on if a hurricane is coming this way. I take what I can pack in the suv and the evo don't want to loose her. Also I getting everything I need to do the diffs, transfer, and trans.

How fast does gas go bad? In a month....or less?

I usually drive my 90 eclipse gsx around because people in NY seem to like to key nice cars...so I try not to leave mine in parking lots unattended. I put about 4000 miles on mine in the last year and that includes a trip from michigan to NY.
Mike
P.S. My car has 60,000 on it. not to high but not exactly low either.

disconnecting the battery will save the extra headache of trying to keep it charged

I live in NE Ohio and my car has been driven daily since it was bought i in 2004 (by my brother in law). 31,245 is what is on the clock. I have a civic but has been up and down. it is AWD and is like a tank. I can take the wife and kids (2 and 4 yrs old w/ 1 on the way in May) my girls love the Evo. I get can you go faster daddy and they both sit in the back seat going PSSSSSHHHHH, PSSSSSHHHHH PSSSSSSHHHHHH. My mother in law ask them what sound daddy's car makes and the 4 yr old goes vrrrrroooommmm, psssssshhhh!!!!

With that kind of response from my kids i feel guilty when we take my wife's pilot!!!!

^that is priceless. My g/f's son loves my Evo. Always says go faster. Oooo, we're really going fast. And every time he sees the car when I come over he calls it a race car. I think its so cute.
