All depends on you level of commitment. Ivey, Mellon....they are excellent tuners, but there is more then enough information on this site for you to tune your own car if your dedicated. Like everything else there is a risk but if you understand the concept of tuning and log log log log log log log.....and then log some more. You should in the very least be able to make your car run better and when you have enough money you can take it to Ivey or Mellon for a second opinion.

if you're smart enough and can understand the concepts and theory of tuning you can definitely tune it yourself. Go buy some books on efi tuning and study them, read the ecuflash forum and try to soak up all the information you can.
after you have done this you can decide for yourself if you are comfortable tuning your car. If you do decide to tune it yourself, just make small changes and only change one thing at a time. It will take you awhile but you will be happy with the result. You will have to be patient.
tuning is not rocket science or black magic!
if you do decide to go with a tuner though, i would recommend Mellon
