JDM Evos and well everything else.
Today I had a conversation with my friend about my mod path and he ask me if I was going the JDM route? So I said I honestly don't know what the JDM route is, if you don't mind explaining it to me. His answer was "All japanese parts." However, last I remember when I first entered this whole japanese scene JDM meant that it functioned with as close to OEM form as possible (unless body additions were necessary) so to his question I answered no.
My reasoning is because of the following:
I trust the cosworth 2.2 stroker over an HKS 2.3 stroker and it also gives me the rev limit that I want. Cosworth is not japanese.
Forced performance is not japanese
The shop who's tuning my car is not japanese
I do have swift swaybars and most of my suspension is from japan except the energy suspension.
Sparco is not japanese
Takata is but I don't care because I know it works
Eventually I'll purchase an AMS C/F roof (not japanese) etc.
I think you get the point from the few parts I've listed above, but I honestly don't understand the JDM craze. If it works and is proven I could not care less if it was from Africa. I'm not knocking those of you who only buy Japanese parts, but I'm a little unclear on what JDM is. Is JDM "clean" or something else?

I'm not sure what you mean by "functioned with proper form" but I guess what you are getting at is form follows function as in a part is meant to do its job the best way possible, and how pretty it looks comes secondary.
The whole JDM bit to me, is just to see who can spend the most on obscure hard to find Japanese parts. It best works for Hondas, who started the craze, because their cars don't come the same way they do over there. We get, for the most part, the same Evo the rest of the world does. No engine swaps are needed.
If you want to mod your car and style it like the people in Japan do, then that could be considred a JDM Evo, and yeah, that would mean using all Japanese parts. But to me, unless you pack your car up and send it overseas to have Amuse or Tomei, or Blitz or whoever tune it too, then it can't really be totally mad tyte JDM yo!!!!1111
But anyway, there are plenty of competant American parts and tuners that will give just as good results.

JDM = Japanese Domestic Market. If it's a JDM part its made in Japan. Thats all
No craze some think thats it cool since its a japanese car to have all the parts on the car from Japan. Too expensive if you ask me

JDM has been synonymous with clean or a certain look. Bronze wheels (Volks not Rota's), carbon fiber, Titainium everywhere you can, subtle (or not if you go full voltex). Its a combination of the above and hard to find JDM parts (which equals DUCATS spent).
I was into Honda's (Still am) and basically you tried to get the most OEM JDM parts you could and aftermarket parts from companies that aren't as well known here.
Its a sickness I'm still affiliated with but I'm slowly weaning myself off. I still like subtle/understated but I also realize there are more then enough US companies with proven parts that are affordable and great quality (CBRD/Buschur/Forced Performance, etc).
Going JDM is cool but for me being a family person going faster and looking good is worth more to me.
With all that said I still have Rota's for my EVO but I still plan on buying some Volks (I still haven't completely gotten over my sickness).
