Evo's Exhaust Note
Evo's Exhaust Note
Is it just me or do Evo's sound like ***? Sounds no different from any other generic 4 banger except slightly deeper.
I came from a S2000 with an Mugen Exhaust/Test-Pipe that sounded like a damn F1 car.
I've heard an assortment of exhausts and none of them really do it for me. I currently have an HKS and from inside or out it sounds like crap. Even when other Evo's drive by it's nothing special.
Not trying to bash or anything just sharing my thoughts. One of the few things I dislike about the car. I understand it's not going to sound like a V8 or Flat 4 but I wish it was a bit more distinct.

All I can say on this is EVERY exhaust sounds different. I'm currently running a megan Cat back and it sounds completely different than a Buschur 3" w/ test pipe and bullet muffler. Or from any other exhaust system.
If any one has a sound clips from their exhaust post them up!!!
Or get on youtube anad search EVO exhaust.

Yea, Ive had the same thoughts as the OP. A larger muffler will make the exhaust note deeper. Canister-style mufflers sound more high pitched and that's usually what you see on modified hondas. You could also build your engine to rev higher like your former s2k but you're not gonna reach the same exhaust note.
I've also thought that the twin scroll might have something to do with the sound. I think the exhaust pulses are matched between alternating cylinders which would also make it sound like "***".
I remember an article in grassroots motorsports about a guy that built a datsun 240 with a v8 but he matched the headers to sync with cylinder exhaust timing and said that it sounded like a 4 cylinder. He however made more horsepower because of the increased efficiency in expelling the exhaust. If it makes power I'm all for it. It doesn't matter if the guy next to you has a sick *** exhaust note when you're pulllng away from him.

Distinct? Try and open wastegate (my old car in and out of the AMGs video):

In the end, its the type of exhaust used. Mine was deep and low. I liked it much more than other companies I had heard.
Also search for the Cobb exhaust, I liked that one also - quiet in car, nice rubble outside.

Note that also the header/exhaust manifold affects the overall sound a lot as well, on top of resonators and bends on the exhaust pipe.
Replacing with equal length headers on 911's or WRX's would negate that 'V8 like rumble' on their flat4 or flat6 engines.
IMO, with equal length headers/exhaust manifolds (those tubular ones) on either S2000, evo, or civics, with straight through minimal bend exhausts with minimal resonating results in bumble bee sounds, just louder and more obnoxious on smaller engines, and in naturally aspirated spec (ie B16B/B18C nastiest > F20C/F22C > 4G63). If you hear 600cc Honda bikes with catless exhausts revving to 15k, you will know what I mean.
Also cars like Carrera GT and F430 sounds good because their exhaust system is shaped like an instrument, with different exits, variation in diameter of tubings, many bends and such. They deliberately put a lot of research on them to make them sound good. If you stick equal length headers and stick a straight pipe sticking out the rear fenders, they are going to sound just as nasty and obnoxious, and much louder.
BTW I'm not bashing Hondas nor S2k, as I have owned both AP1 and AP2 before, and Mugen definately sounds good, perhaps most balanced out of all aftermarket exhausts, although I prefer Amuse. But imo, number of cylinders or their layout doesn't really make much difference in sound if the exhaust pipings are shaped the same.

I like the way it sounds, its called power on a well breathing engine. Get upgraded turbo with wastegate dump, and you'll be happy.
I like the s2000 note, but it still doesn't sound better than a 4G
