they should be able to look at it and determine if its covered, without bringing your car in the shop. If they plan to charge you they need to at least notify you that youre liable to pay up to a certain amount.

from there you decide. best of luck man!

One time a friend and I picked up a TV stand with his pickup on a below freezing night, we brought it inside and started puting it together and as we were doing so the glass door touched something metal and exploded. I'm guessing it had to do somthing with rapid tempature changes

Yeah Berts ... tempered glass can do some weird stuff, especially when resonance is involved.

I dropped the car off at the dealer and specifically had to ask "what if it's not warrantied?" I was told it's a $92 charge for "diagnosis." Lol ... it needs a damn pane of glass, not hard to diagnose. But, I see the point ...a tech has to open up the door and check the regulator and such and he has to be paid.

Hopefully they will cover it, but I'm still not expecting it. The story is off the wall, but I really can't help that. I think at best I could try to negotiate the "diagnosis" charge ... I probably should have just bought the glass. Too late now I guess.

This happened before in my parents car when I was an infant (~20 yrs ago) The whole back hatch window shattered spontaneously...I don't really remember exactly what happened, but that's what they tell me.

Dude, that totally blows goats. I would say something hit it, doubtful it saw its resonance frequency, but who knows? Get it fixed man.

prolly best bet is to look into the aftermarket for someone that will come out and install/clean up glass mess. usually can be found that will install one for less than dealer can get just part for. i work as a service advisor at a mitsu dealer, and honestly, if u brought that to me, i would think u were ****ing nuts (we get tons of people that are, so u get to the point where if it looks like a duck...). even if that is what happened on my own evo (has been out of warranty for about 1 month/1k miles) while i was still covered, i would have just went ahead and gotten one aftermarket. often times the after market places installed price is less than what the dealer pays for said peice of glass, and usually can be done same day as fone call where dealer would have to order said part. just a thought. good luck.

Well, I really want to go with OE glass. If I eventually sell the car, I don't want a buyer to notice that the glass doesn't have the Mitsu mark and think that the car was wrecked or something and end up screwing myself out of money. I'd rather pay an extra $100 now rather than take a $2000 hit later on.

Its very possible. I have friends who worked for lexus. On the older sc models, some had issues with the sunroof cracking when you shut the doors-- due to the built up cabin pressure. Apparantly, some new mercedes GLKs have had issues with the rear hatch door glass shattering when you shut the hatch, for that same reason.

I can almost guess that someone tried to break into your car but wasn't successful because you were out to your car at the right time so when you drove home, hit a bump and boom! But then again, who knows. Glad you're ok

There was definitely no bump ... I drive this road daily and it is well maintained.

I need to go through the glass I vacuumed up yesterday and look for a rock or something. While vacuuming, I saw nothing.

Still waiting to hear from the dealer.
