Ix turbo upgrade

Wondering if anyone has changed there ix turbo compression wheel from a 16g to a 20g? Did u do it urself or have some do it for u. Found a 20g wheel for like 150 brand new I think it also includes the turbo side where the intake bolts up

no sir lol majority of people would just upgrade completely. map sst, bbk full, tomei arms, hta green, fp red or fp black and call it a day. being cheap is not always the answer. save the money and the time and just get another better stock frame housing turbo.

Yes, just not worth the savings. If something goes wrong you are out the wheel and the housing most likely. There are too many proven stock frame turbos out there for reasonable prices to justify taking the risk of doing it yourself. I would pay the extra money, and take the guarantee/warranty from a vendor/manufacturer.

I am not trying to discourage your DIY skills. If you are confident to do it, give it a shot and see what happens. Post a thread on your results. 150 isn't much of a gamble, so I say go for it. I didn't just for piece of mind in the turbo.

Good luck

It is also not as simple as just bolting on the wheel. The rotating assembly will have to be balanced (expensive machine) and the compressor housing inlet has to be opened up some (another expensive machine).
Stuffing a revese 20g wheel in a stock housing has been done however, and is what some shops offered when there were no other bolt on turbo upgrades. There were some gains, nothing that really kept these in wide production, and problems with compressor surge.

sometimes going for the cheaper product in the short run will end up costing you more in the long run. i would probably save a little more to buy a whole turbo

+1 on the compressor wheel needing to be balanced. If it comes with a compressor housing, it might already be machined for the larger wheel, but I'm betting that the wheel would have to be balanced. There's an awful lot of used green's floating around to take that risk...

Save up & send your IX to FP or sell your IX & use that money to buy a bigger bolt on.

I just sold my ix turbo on ebay for $500.00 and purchased a fp black that was on sale at fp for $1750.00. I would go with a stock frame turbo that will give you some good power. Just my opinion.

IMo it's not worth it... If you can afford it, there at a lot of better turbo's that won't do too much damage and will make in excess of 500awhp. May I sugest a FP BLACK!
