Helloo, Ive got a 03 rally red. I just sold my 04 gt40 full bolt on srt4 and decided to try something new.
I bought the car as it sits. For some reason, the car wont rev past 5k. dunno what it could be, havent really had the chance to look into it yet. The check engine light is on, Havent pulled the codes. I just bought the car, didnt take delivery of it yet, so im trying to see if its just a random sensor i need to swap out, if its a common problem. Im not too familiar with the evo's, so im hoping its something simple!

Does it have the stock intake snorkel. If so make sure the clips are there to hold it to the rad support. If not it lifts and chokes out air flow.

As for the CEL pull the code man

 

Rev as in neutral at a stop?

 

Yeah you need to check the light. If I am not mistaken some of them will stop the motor from reving to prevent damage.

 

Will do thanks guys, And yeah its got the stock pipe, aftermarket bov though so its got some sort of silver cap on where the stocker goes.
Ill pull the codes when i pick it up, I still havent taken possesion of the vehicle. And ill make sure the pipes strapped, It more then likely isnt. Thanks for the pointers, Any other ideas before i pull the codes?

 

Ive never tried it at a stop, Only at wot in 2nd gear. Ill give this a try too, It will help see if its overboosting or its a computer issue, good idea.

 

^This. The ******* I bought my car from had the clips out of the snorkel and the car fell on it's face right around 5k. it didn't stop revving, it just stops pulling very hard.

 

This breaks up like it hits fuel cut, Once it hits right around 5k, Thats it. Like im bumping the rev limiter. but it breaks up like over boost, maybe its something simple like the vacuum line came off the wga, or maybe its hitting fuel cut because the line came off the fuel rail...I havent examined it close enough to rule anything out yet

 

almost sounds like your launch control when your stopped in first gear it wont rev past 5 grand, possibly something gone wrong in that area?

Could also be a clogged cat, but sounds more to me like something to do with the launch control system.

 

He already said its when hes moving, WOT in 2nd. So its def not that.

 

I had a similar problem on my evo 9.

The MAF sensor was not plugged in. Check engine light was on. As soon as I did that, the car ran great.

 

This could be, Theyve got the stock intake on there where the metal mesh is exposed, no pipe. ghetto as hell. Im picking the car up for a reasonable price, its got stuff done that the guy doesnt even know it has from the previous owner...I just would like to figure it out as soon as i can, I dont want to take this 2k mile trip to FL back home with it in limp mode or fuel cut or anything. Trying to play it as safe as possible.

 

Its got an aftermarket exhaust, Then again who knows because it is pretty quiet... Im gonna switch up the exhaust anyway eventually so ill try and rule this out.

 

Nah, Its not a 2-step type of thing. It wont bounce at 5k, It bogs and sounds like overboost/fuel cut.
