Since this is my DD, I'm not really considering taking the downtime to get everything disassembled and shipped off to be coated.

However, now that you brought it up... if seen a lot of tubular exhaust mani with flaking ceramic coating that looks like hell. Is there any ceramic coatings that are 99% sure not to flake? Anyone swear by a certain type of coating available?

Might be a good option to wait for some downtime... coat the turbo, exhaust mani, and O2 house at the same time???

I've see some very nice custom heat shields... like shown here ATPWRAP

I heard a custom turbo/manifold like this is about $900, but I haven't checked.

You do realize no matter what eventually it will flake my dude fact of life its how long until it does. Carlos coatings have held up for 2years+ SO HE IS A GREAT COATER. when it comes time to recoat im positive he will cut you a deal since he did it orginally. I would say quit playing games and do it the correct way and coat it wait for the downtime.

I painted my Swain Tech coating with high-temp black paint, and the coating has held up great.

RockmanX,

So from the options that are available, you're recommending ceramic coating my exhaust manifold, O2 housing, and turbo by JMS when I get the downtime, right? Am I missing anything?

You have a rough cost estimate for coating?

It is not IF the coating flakes, but WHEN it will have to be recoated.

So painting with high-temp paint in lieu of recoating would probably be an option as well. Good to know

As for the 2.5 or 2.6 I talked about it a little with Oliver at SBR I wasn't aware it was Brian Cower parts but I figured if it maintained a rod angle ratio or the 2.3 then It would be like having a 2.3 with the extra displacement from the .3 liters.

I know this block wont last forever and when the time comes I will more then likely go to a LR2.4 with a HTA35 or something.
You will not do that hommie chances are you will part ways with the car before it need another motor fact of life hommie LOL

To the OP here is a pic of a 2+ year old coating job done by carlos on a evo i rode in while i was down at JMS. Still looks as good as the day he got it done doesnt it

Nah lol, me and her in it for the long haul. I put this much money into here no sense in getting rid of her.

My wife already has a Ford Escape so I dont need to get rid of it for the Family and I'm planning to buy a beater to keep miles down...granted can't plan for life but I plan to try and keep it.

Hell its in my will that if I die the car goes to my 4 year old son the Major that did my Will said hes never seen anything like that.

The blanket and even ceramic coating/blanket will have zero negative effects.
On the contrary, the more heat you can keep inside your exhaust manifold/turbine the faster your turbo will spool. The hotter you can get air the less dense it becomes, this increases the volume of the air. This is when you start getting into ceramic coating the head/valve faces/exhaust ports etc.

The DEI turbo blankets are only made for t3/t4 turbos, and to be honest they work amazingly well.

Well at some point the contained heat would have to degrade the life of the turbo, I mean thats why we all arnt running turbo lag correct? At some level the heat will take away from the turbos life. I think the question is, is the heat that the blanket or coating is keeping it meet that level.

It won't degrade the life of the turbo, trust me I've coated a couple hundred turbine housings/manifolds for cars all over the US.
The best possible combination is ceramic/blanket on your turbine housing.
DEI lava blanket, is the best turbo blanket money can buy.

Well that should answer the OPs question. I was a little curious myself as to if the compounding of heat stored by the wrap cause any damage. But good to know its doesn't.
